It's become painfully evident over the last couple of days that Mediafire is not a stable host. In the last two days, four of my links have been deleted from their system and I have a sinking feeling that this is only the beginning and that I'll ultimately have to re-upload most of my extant links again via Rapidfire. I'll be closely monitoring all my existing links to correct things as needed. Sorry to all who have been digging the switch to Mediafire, but this is not a tenable situation.

no problem. in this anonymous reader's opinion, rapidshare is better anyway.
ReplyDeleteAs I am not an expert on these matters I can´t have a well-informed opinion on them but what I know as a user is that it seems that Rapidshare has increased the waiting time between two downloads from 50-70 minutes to almost 120 minutes!!! At least the last 2 or 3 times I wanted to download more than once from them, that's what happened : wait 112 minutes for the next download...But there are of course other things to consider, among them the deletion of files by those services... keep on the way you think it's best ...

I have found SendSpace to be quite reliable. It also has the added benefit of not forcing free users to wait any refractory period, simply grab one and then get the next when it is finished. As a filehosting option.. it is another great provider of excellent services; that's my opinion. I, like you, do not look forward to re-uploading and have gotten by just fine with eschewing the usage of Rapidshare altogether {..except for one single post, early on}. If the "slots are full" issue arises for some, a simple proxy can sidestep that problem (i.e onlyproxy.com or any other non-payment ip masking service). Long live a free utopian world of music for 1 and all!
ReplyDeleteThese are my thoughts on the matter...

Sorry to hear about your difficulties with MediaFire. From my end, I thought it was great - substantially faster than Rapidshare.
ReplyDeleteHave you considered Megaupload ? I can handle a slow download speed if I don't have to wait 90 minutes before I can download again.
But whatever you choose, thanks for the uploads to come :-)
Mysteryposter-Thanks a bunch for the tip about sendspace! I'm gonna investigate...
ReplyDeleteMediafire is for socialists anyway.
ReplyDeleteI've never understood why people think Rapidshare shouldn't profit. Why not? It costs them money for the servers. So they pass those costs on to us - the customer - like any other business would.
FREE is not always better. Look at healthcare in Europe for example. Sure Europe has "free" universal healthcare, but at what "price"?
How long do you have to wait for minor to major surgeries? Sometimes a long, long time. In the United States, you'll get service immediately.
Yes, you also may get a huge doctor's bill in the US, but most hospitals allow you to pay off your bill $10 or $20 a month, so it works out.
I'd rather get the service I need now, and pay for it later, than to be denied service or be placed on a waiting list.
Therefore, a nice analogy can be made between health insurance and file hosting, I think. You get what you pay for, folks.
Long live Rapidshare.
Here is an unbiased opinion regarding sendspace: good to use, but only if you're okay with the file being temporary. A lot of sendspace links I find which are more than 20 or 30 days old are dead already.
ReplyDeleteI think the two best hosters are Megaupload and Rapidshare. So thanks for switching back to Rapidshare.
Yes, I too prefer Rapidshare because Sendspace expires, and Mediafire as we've seen deletes downloads. Guys, a month of unlimited downloading on Rapidshare only costs 7 Euros or something. That is CHEAP. Buy it in save yourself the headaches.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the incredible work on the blog both of you!
damn... Well, have you considered
ReplyDeleteUploaded.to?
You could even use Megaupload.
Ah well... Fun while it lasted!
I'll still be supporting anyhow.

I bought a premium RS account on eBay for $5.95 for 30 days. That comes out to 20 cents a day. If you can't afford 20 cents a day, then you're a bum and don't deserve to be downloading any music anyway. Everyone should pay 20 cents a day and stop complaining. Why the fuss?
ReplyDeleteRapidshare seems most predictable, but parallel free downloads are nice too.
ReplyDeleteIf you don't want to pay for Rapidshare, just disconnect your computer after you download. Once you reconnect, Rapidshare recognizes you as a new user, and you can download right away (might be different for some people). Also, if you make a mistake with the verification code, just hit the back button to the verification page and try again.
I've been having a hard time coping with rapidshare - as it sometimes refuses to display the code image - but you should do what you've got to, to keep this excellent blog in operation.
ReplyDeleteI'm just sorry people had to troll your comments thread with remarks about who "deserves" what.
I won't pay 20 cents a day to anybody to download music ...
ReplyDeleteI am not complaining - just stating facts ...
I don't care which service you use ...the one which causes you less distress as an uploader ...
Why is it necessary to download 50 records in an hour if you have no time to listen to them - unless you are a bum with nothing to do and with 20 cents a day to spare on rapidshare...
As I said before, choose what's best for you in the first place ...all upload services have their positive & negative points ...
Oh! And I am an anarchist/socialist (??? -is there something like that ?...)
Oh...I forgot to sign my last comment ...

the free accounts all have their drawbacks, i recently caved and got a paid rapidshare account as well. we do appreciate all your hard work uploading this great music; thanks. (:
ReplyDeleteThat's good news ; Rapidshare is by far the most reliable and "honest" service. I suscribed to a premium account and that's a really wise decision I think. I have hard times with those Sendspace bunchers telling me that they're sorry because for my location... ...
ReplyDeleteAnyway I'm not gonna complain and I keep in mind that we are very lucky to have fabulous places like Mutantsounds. keep up the incredible posts, my friend(s).
P.S : by the way, unlike the anonymous earlier above, I don't think that good service and serious business belongs to non socialists or right wing capitalists, I would rather be persuaded of the contrary...

I really dislike RApidshare because they have imposed waiting times of two hours in between downloads. I'm always afraid this stuff is going to be gone soon, so I want to download it right away. Also, I just found out that Curved Air had 90 % of his links removed due to Rapidshare receiving complaints from people about his shares, even though most of his shares are from out-of-print or extremely rare releases.
ReplyDeleteThis is really getting out of hand. Bloggers are not making money from this, but are trying to make out-of-print music available for people to hear. what's the harm in that? In my opinion, Rapidshare is one of the worst services because of it's extensive time waiting periods and the daily limits on downloads even with a paid subscription. Also, it isn't as fast as Mediafire or Rogepost.
I just think that it's worth trying a couple different services before returning to Rapidshare again. However, you are doing a great service to all of us by providing these musical gems in the first place. So, the decision is yours to make. Keep up the good work!
Kevin
Ok jokers..
ReplyDelete...here's the deal and how it went down with my blog: At first, I tried several different services and was going to continue with the variety.
The only post I put on Rapidshare was worth doing it for: Mad Curry (link is still rockin' & if you haven't soaked yourself in it, grab some of the tasty).
Badongo was not really totally reliable and buggy (for uploading too) so that went the way of Nixon. Then I decided to use Mega explicitly [this is before they out a cap on d/l, induced waiting times, and total daily size limitations - this may or may not be the case any longer, couldn't say]; it was cool for me and some others too - then I got some sad kvetching about folks not being able to use the service (I believe that a Firefox hack (in my Children of One post) actually took care of that issue, but...)
I switched up to something a tad more appeasing across the board - that's when SendSpace became my one true love (lol, haha, whatever..). The limited time for a file only applies to the time in between downloads, period. Yes, a file will be given the boot if it is not on the d/l from someone in the (I guess) 20(!?) to 30(more likely) days.
Case in point: Abrial Stratageme Group.

If my math is right, that's 71 days.
Still there. (Another goodie.)
So, with that logic tree intact, a blog like this, (one of, if not the) most popular in the world (seemingly) should have no issue for lack of grifters, myself inclusive. That's my 75 cents.
~Le Signorino Misterioso
p/s In my opinion, it is the facility of having the actual link URL visible, hence making it easy to report said item. For all the griping I get about using BestProtect, I sleep very well at night knowing full well that the source address is properly obfuscated - in turn allowing the free free freeness to reign.

Kevin-My feeling on this is "better the devil you know than the devil you don't" as the vast majority of links currently existing on Mutant Sounds are rapidshare links and those links have been stable to date. Daily download limits on subscriber accounts are something I've yet to run into on rapidshare and I've downloaded as many as 50+ titles in a day, often 15-20 downloading simultaneously with no wait involved.
ReplyDeleteI can appreciate people taking the philosophical stance that "I don't want to pay for downloading music". The same could be said for driving. You *could* walk. You don't necessarily have to support big industry. But if you want to have things happen in the precise way that you wish for them to happen (i.e. with great ease and flexibility), sometimes you just have to pay for that. Thats just my feeling. Others opinions are equally valid...
Mysteryposter-strangely, your message didn't appear 'til after Kevin's or I would have addressed what you've said in my previous message. I really appreciate the in-depth breakdown of your experiences across various services and it really helps to clarify certain things for me. I'm gonna run everything you've said by Mr. MS to get his take on it, so we'll see where this leads....
ReplyDeleteThat's not only a philosophical stance : that's also a practical one ...I really don't give a damn about these things ... I don't have credit cards, multibank cards, cheques, driving license ...I walk or travel by public transports ... for me, it's fine ... whatever you choose ...what I wish is peace & to hear music I like and so on ...
ReplyDeleteI do as I wish ... it's like that quotation of Rabelais re-interpretd by Crowley and cited by Mystery Poster ...
Well, philosophical stances or not ... that's like Mystery Poster says citing Rabelais later re-interpreted by Crowley ... I really don't give a damn about rapidshare or mediafire or whatever ... And I walk / travel by public transports - never wanted to have a driving license ...neither have I credit cards, cheques, multibank cards (ATL ???) ... Keep on the way you think it's the best ...
