French composer (27 April 1932, Tamatave, Madagascar). Studied in Bordeaux (1946–54), at the Paris Conservatoire, with Olivier Messiaen (1958–9) and at the Darmstadt summer courses (1960–62) with Karlheinz Stockhausen, among others. Joined the Service de la recherche of Organisation de la radio télévision Française (ORTF) in 1960, recently established by Pierre Schaeffer. In 1966 Schaeffer put Bayle in charge of the Groupe de recherches musicales (GRM). From then on he remained active as a composer, an administrator and a music theorist. During these years he organized concerts, radio broadcasts, seminars and events celebrating individual composers, supported technological developments (Syter, GRM Tools, Midi Formers, Acousmographe) and was behind major innovations, such as the Acousmonium (an orchestra of loudspeakers) and the INA-GRM recordings label. He also founded in 1992 the Acousmathèque with a repertory of 2000 works composed after 1948. After leaving GRM in 1997, he founded his own audio-numerical and multiphonic studio, the Studio Magison, where he has devoted himself to research, writing and composition.
Probably the most musical recording of Bayle. The dronesque sinewaves add huge depth and harmonic quality to Bayle's trademark concrete sound. Beautiful !
You beat me to it! This was going to be one of my next posts... (Drat, grumble, moan, etc.)
ReplyDeleteNo worries, of course - it's a wonderful recording, one crying out to be heard by a new generation.
Hail Mutant Sounds!
TS
one of my favorite records of all time. I can only guess how many times I've listened to this.
ReplyDeleteand the original LP sequence / mix is still the best.
worth noting that though you've shown the original LP cover, this download is a rip of the 90's CD issue, which replaces side 1 with a completely different (though equally wonderful) piece, and has a different mix of 'toupie dans le ciel'.
ReplyDeletere: francois bayle, wow!...yet more coolness, it's like I'm stuck in some acid induced "fantastic planet" scenario....which they seem to be in the process of remaking....
ReplyDeleteindeed, the .rar is the CD version and not the LP as shown on the picture above…
ReplyDeletethe pieces on the CD are "Tremblement de Terre très doux" and "Toupie dans le Ciel"
the pieces on the LP are "La Fin du Bruit", "Eros Bleu", "Toupie dans le Ciel", "Eros Noir"…
it's still cool to watch the gorgeous sleeve of the LP, this collection use to be one of the finest achievement in LP sleeve design…
then… a rip of the LP would still be fine!
i have most of Bayle LP except this one which is my fav'… extraordinary music to say the least…
and great blog, thanks !
this is the only version i've ever heard and it's absolutely beautiful
