Maru Sankaku Shikaku(Circle Triangle Square)-same,3xLP,1971-1973,Japan
Tribal-hippie-street-performance group that was active in Tokyo, 1970-1973. They recorded and released these three limited-edition LPs in '73. Each LP contains two long improvised pieces. The approach is a simple anybody-can-play attitude. The results include clangy tribal rituals, free-form intuitive acid jams, sly humor, Yoko-like vocal techniques, scratchy exploratory improv, electronic blips, and general good (but weird) vibes . Comes in a fold-out poster-like cover, with beautiful psych-dada-primitive art and collage by the band. From group leader Sakuro "Kant" Watanabe's liner notes: "Time. Avant-garde, rock'n'roll, vagabond, inhaling paint thinner, journey, beat, nihilism, underground, blues, hippie, Kohenji, genius, LSD, Shinjuku, yippie, pain killer, death, shoplifting, long hair, revolution, insanity, Kyoto, grass, hitchhiking, sex, commune, psychedelic, hashish, Zen, Asobi (playing or game), Satori (spiritual enlightenment), make-up, solitude, loneliness, anti-establishment, idiot, cool, rock festival, trip, guru--they were neighbors, part of us, and enemies sometimes."
I think the notes by Kant really nail this one right off: inhaling paint thinner, journey, beat, nihilism, underground, blues. Stellar set. Thank you once again, Mutant & crew...
