With a sticker proclaiming that Matt Johnson of The The appears you take their word for it as there's little evidence of what Johnson was laying down for his first album. The fact is he's credited with Wasp and Rhythm Box and one third writer. The Gadgets were,in the main,Colin Lloyd Tucker and Simon Fisher Turner and whoever else was around as they created some rather odd songs and instrumentals such as "Termite Mound" and "U F O Report No.1" The sleeve note by Brian Bell is equally bizrre as he admits he'd rather listen to Petula Clark rather than the Gadgets! Another member John Hyde had written the Marmite commercial and apparantly was able to use his royalties to finance this project. The Plastic Head CD is undated apart from the "1980" on the back but as its a CD it would have been from the 90s,seeing as Matt Johnson was not using the collective name till the year after.

ReplyDeleteBut cheers for this!
I love this one! The relentless ticky-tacky drum machines and minimal synths actually remind me a bit of wall of voodoo minus stan ridgeway. (tho admittedly wall of voodoo didnt sound much like this after ridgeway left.) Thanks again guys!
