Following my posts of unreleased material by Ghedalia Tazartes along with assorted exponents of Australian underground sounds, here's a further installment of of unreleased experimental music history thats bound to astound. Anyone up for 100+ minutes of broadcast quality live Henry Cow? Thought so. I'll refrain from indulging in some extended analysis of Henry Cow and their importance, a subject thats been hashed over endlessly by now. Rather, I'll just state that this recording is nothing short of a revelation and includes reams of goosebump inducing improvisations that are of crucial importance, especially given the critical role improvisation played in the Henry Cow dynamic and how little of this side of their work has heretofore been documented (one LP of their live double and one side on the Greasy Truckers compilation). Over an hour of this is dedicated to said unreleased improvised material, making this recording something of the ark of the covenant for R.I.O. fanboys and improv geeks alike. Why oh why has this slice of musical godhead failed to receive a proper release yet? Only the R.I.O. overlords at ReR can answer that. For now though, I expect many here will be greedily supping from the teat of this fount of goodness and inspiration.

ReplyDeleteAm currently listening to several utterly deranged albums that I've taken from your site in the past few days, and quite frankly I'm jumping for joy. Can't really better what has already been said by so many people here, but about a year ago, in some dreadful personal circumstances I had almost no enthusiasm left for music, which (along with the bicycle) I consider to be mankind's greatest invention. Things have picked up again now, as they usually do in the ebb and flow of life, and that has co-incided with finding your site, and rediscovering my musical mojo. I feel a driven zest to hear as much music as I can again, and there are so many absolute diamonds posted here that seems entirely possible. Thank you so much for all the hard work you are doing here, it's exactly what the Net was invented for, connecting people, sharing ideas and spreading the word. You have my complete respect and my gratitude. Keep on keeping on.

ReplyDeletei recognize tracks 1 & 2 as have material from 'Unrest' and 'Western Culture'. But track 3, I've never heard before, and I have all the legit Henry Cow records, so any assistance in this regard will be greatly appreciated.
as was said Henry Coe were mostly impro group and most of live stuff has nothing to di with album material. If you had all legit material - tale cd2 of Concerts for instance. This is one more reason to have all material survived published.

ReplyDeleteJust listening to this now. As to track 03, I'm not sure about the intro, but at about 1:55 it goes into Tim's Vive Pa Ubu, originally on the Recommended Sampler and added to the reissue of Western Culture. I'm still trying to figure out what it is after that, obviously a written piece.
