KIMITAKA MATSUMAE-YOU ARE THE FOX 1-4, CD'S, 1997, JAPAN

A virtual valhalla of retardo doink action and irrepressible inspired idiocy, these four solo albums by Kimitaka Matsumae (leader of the deranged sounding Expo, who's CD I posted a few weeks back) exude much the same air of sugar shocked false good cheer as Picky Picnic's breed of perky poison. Really though, it's only the work of Matsumae's contemporary Naofumi Ishimaru as Yximalloo (a motherlode of which is coming tomorrow) that seems comparable to what is happening here, if only for the sheer scale of the respective geysers of goof they both spew. What sets Matsumae's solo work a bit apart though is his deeper investment in the grammar of noxious Japanese commercial and children's music, often rendering the proceedings questionable enough to cause a reflexive reach for the pause button, only to get slammed in the head by an apropos-of-nothing dadaist eruption that recasts said questionable moves as brilliant tactical maneuvers existing only to further befoul your already addled brain.

Note: all these links were pulled off Rapidshare simultaneously, so evidently Mr. Matsumae isn't keen on these being shared...

  3. Ok...I really dug that Picky Picnic and I've been a Yximalloo fan for a long time (really nice guy, by the way...people should send him money)...I grabbed part one of this and skimmed a few songs but just do not get it. Am I missing something? Should I give the rest of it a chance? Am I just somehow hitting all bad moments and completely missing things that, like so much music I grab from you guys, will make me pee my pants? Sometimes repeatedly...

  4. Thine Coleyesque mutterings possess an exquisite snark, much like a narky denizen of Soho might snicker at an uptown doyenne who stumbles down an unfashionable avenue in search of a je-ne-sais-quoi non-sequitur.

But hey, keep it up! The sounds, they, like, rock...

  5. Shane-you might want to opt for a box of Depends, as pants peeing seems likely to ensue once you cease skimming and sit for a while with these insane little gems. I was just playing disc two last night and it was taking my head off, so maybe start there?

  6. You probably know this, but you can get Klaus Bloch over on Atlantis Audio Archive. Thought I'd mention it, since it's on your "want" list.

  7. just three minutes into this megarelease has convinced me of its genius! a work of ooposites in extreme - of hyper-opposites, whatever that may mean... something in between CNN-sub-muzak and the most obscure of the creel pone reissues...
in this context of creel pones, could it occur do you think that one would come across some early japanese eolectronic musics at this place (which has since a week or so become THE place for me)??

  8. OK, I was wrong. That should teach me not to judge after a skimming. I grabbed disc two and loved the sheer oddness of the stuff. The juxtaposition of seemingly normal bits with unexpected bursts of wacko is just great. This music's all over the place just like I like it.

  14. It's odd, I even have a Japanese install of Windows XP... and yet most of the Japanese mp3s I download from your blog have extremely mangled titles. The Japanese characters appear in obscure patterns like so: "縺ゅ↑縺溘・繧ュ繝・ロ・・1-35 繧キ繧吶Ε繝槭す繧吶Ε繝.mp3" with the characters being odd things like "tangle", "method of dying", "stutter", "maple tree", and other kanji which are completely "off" from what the track listings are supposed to be. Any idea why this might be?
