All time godhead monster alert, people! While the Ya Ho Wha 13 tribe's psychedelic freakouts and it's associated mythos have been much lauded and roundly investigated in hipster quarters over the last several years, there has been a complete absence of discussion about a similar and yet far more advanced spiritual/musical tribe by the name of Arica. Unlike Father Yod's teachings though, which were largely limited to those in his tribe, *this* group's philosophy would go on to shape the entire thrust of Alejandro Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain, merely THE greatest motion picture in cinema history. All principal actors appearing in the film were required to undertake a rigorous weeks long preparation in Arica training before filming began.
Now add to all of the above this salient detail: despite it's American origin, sonically, this is on par with the absolute best krautrock ever recorded! How 'bout a combination of Dzyan-Electric Silence, Deuter-D, Limbus 4 and the most ethnically tripped passages of Wolfgang Dauner's Et Cetera? Does that work for all you heads out there? Side A in particular is getting about as deep "in the pudding" as I've ever heard any psychonauts venture. Truly...I don't think the vibes coming off this thing could be any heavier unless the sleeve itself had been dipped in a psilocybin bath. It's supernaturally heightened atmosphere is so potently keyed into the cosmos it's almost painfully poignant to confront in this age of reduced expectations. I for one am humbled in it's presence. Note: If anyone out there is in possession of their "Audition" LP, an upload of it would be overwhelmingly appreciated (unless of course you want to sell it to me and let me post it, hehehe...).

Been looking for a copy of this for a while...I found the double lp on WooSoo years ago at a tag sale...inside was a meticulous pen & ink illustration of the 4 kinds of power: solar, wind, water, and, um, pyramid. This is the version with a different side 4 track than the one on Audition ("water Music: Reception of the Buddha", total freak out), so if you want me to send it over let me know. It's the least I could do after grabbing so many goodies from MS.

That's a really cool tidbit knowing that this was the group the actors were sent to study with. There's mention of this in the El Topo book, but I don't believe they actually refer to the group by name.

ReplyDeleteAnonymous-I recall reading somewhere a statement of Jodorowsky's about his growing disillusionment with Arica. It went something like (and I paraphrase here) "It's very hard to accept teachings from a guru with pimples".

ReplyDeleteOops, you're right, the cover must have thrown me off...actually, I'm guessing from the file name that this is actually my own rip that's been circulating on Soulseek for a while now. Maybe I'll send some cover shots their way.
Just checked out the Arica site & it looks like they still have vinyl copies of Heaven for $18 plus $8 shipping (!)...I just bought one, unless I'm still asleep!

Just got my vinyl copy from the Arica web site. And like Eric's photo, mine too has quite a brutal cut-out punch in the lower left corner. But this is a nice one to have in the flesh, to be sure. One of the best psych freeform jams EVER.
ReplyDeleteAfter missing out on the download of Arica's Heaven, I was happy to read that the album was still available from the Arica Foundation, so I bought a copy of it from them on CD. Wow! You're not wrong in describing how awesome this music is.
ReplyDeleteJust so you know - the CD sounds to have been dubbed from vinyl, due to the occasional audible vinyl pop, but other than that it's pretty clean, with no surface noise or crackle that I noticed. Also the CD doesn't come with any of the original artwork, or any info really - not even track listings. Does anyone have a track listing for Heaven?

ReplyDeleteThought I would join in two years worth of requests for the 1971 'Heaven' album from 'Arica', thought some other blog would have posted it but cannot find it, where are all those bloggers that just present other blogs posts when you need them!
If you do know anywhere else its posted or are planning a "re-up" as the kids call it, that would be freakin' splendid.
