back in the early 80's, this pulse-pounding and super intense Downtown NY-by-way-of-Kentucky art damage unit (later to be known simply as Circle X, when they got picked up by Matador in the mid 90's) were marshaling dense thickets of tribal rhythms, distended distorted guitar blare and berserk vocal histrionics in and out of constrictions and implosions in their sonics acccentuated by deft studio manipulation. Not always as relentless as the above might imply, though even the most reflective bits here are acute. A fearsome and brilliant album.

holy shit man, this is fucking rare—these guys caught my attention back in the day when David Grubbs & Jim O'Rourke were still friends & released Circle X's self-titled EP on Dexter's Cigar. Said EP fucking slants & puffs some divine & awkward mania. Thank you so much brother.

Holy shit, indeed. I've been looking since, erm, 1983 for a copy of this. Sounds still (or again) incredibly brilliant. Thx a lot.
ReplyDeleteOh god, this record is trully shocking. I can't believe I missed it for so long.
ReplyDeleteSo, I catch this awesome tune on WFMU and would love to hear a little bit more of this unheard-of-before band. But, who would have such a rarity...?
ReplyDeleteSilly...silly...me.
You are unbelievable.
