DIMTHINGS-IN SPITE OF WHAT THEY SAY, 12" EP, 1984, USA

Back in the day, this cat issued a flood of vinyl and used to give his records away for pennies (I recall $3-$4 a pop being the norm). This, when combined with their shabby looking glued-on xerox covers gave the impression of something un-serious and largely caused his work and catalog to fade into utter obscurity. A pity, as the Dimthings aesthetic was seriously fucked-in-the-head and something worth retroactively marvelling about. Extended freeform D.I.Y. basement mutant jazz fusion crashing headlong into the post-Beefheart/post-Residents axis? Well....something like that. More of this freak's doings will follow soon...

  1. Wow, nice... I've been meaning to digitize the 3 Lp's I have from this era of the Dimthings... I found them in Hamburg for dirt cheap... amazing florida underground music from the 80s.

  2. Dimthings and our Rat Bastard were in the group Scraping Teeth in the late 1980s. They won Spin Magazine's "Worst Band in America" award in 1990! Rat and I met a year later and formed To Live and Shave in L.A....

FM Shades, the 80s Miami freak scene is very poorly documented, but serious synaptic damage (albeit of a less intellectually rigorous sort) was the order of the day.

Thanks for keeping Dimthings' very fucked material alive, VDO.

    Best,

    Tom

  3. Hi Tom...

Very interesting to know about the Dimthings/ TLASILA link! Were there any other Florida experimental units of the period that released something notable? It's a scene I know basically zilch about...

  4. I'll give Rat a ring for the complete list - there were several ur-muck outfits that would easily reside within Mutant Sounds' taxonomic brief.

Happiness Boys update: their Edward Bobb is doing time in a Federal pen for downloading child pornography! Yipes! The sordid details may be found here:

  5. I always enjoyed the Dimthings, which I recently found is actually 1 guy named James Garcia. He changed the name from Dimthings to Dimthingshine now. I found a couple of Web Sites since he recently joined myspace.com/dimthingshine and appears to be starting to re-release his music on CD. Check it out.

  6. Okay,
Dimthingshine (formerly Dimthings) is living in New York now and is working on new avant-garde/prog music. He also goes by the name "Dimthingshineon" for more rock oriented music and goes by the name "Mejdaji" for his world music. He has a few web sites out there for all this stuff on geocities.com and myspace.com .. search them out.

  9. Actually, Tom, Ed is doing time for using images that he had downloaded from an FBI website, in an anti-incest work that he was making. The 'child porn' was just a portion of it- the Feds used that to make the conviction harder to fight. After all, we all know that anyone who downloads 'child porn' is evil, right? Sheeple.
