GESTALT ET JIVE-NOUVELLE CUISINE, LP, 1985, VARIOUS
With an amazing globe-spanning cast of avant rock heavyweights in it's line-up (Alfred Harth from Cassiber and Goebbels and Harth, Steve Beresford from General Strike and The Flying Lizards, Ferdinand Richard from Etron Fou Leloublan, Anton Fier from Pere Ubu and The Golden Palominos), expectations would understandably be set pretty high for the work of this surprisingly little known outfit. Originally a trio of Harth, Richard and Uludag drummer Peter Hollinger (their debut documenting this era coming soon), the remit here on their second recording widens exponentially with the expansion of their line-up, with everyone involved leaving their distinct imprimatur on these recordings, most notably Ferdinand Richard, whose exquisite involuted bass perambulations are the engine at the heart of most of the beautifully gnarled R.I.O.-ish constructs at hand here.
NOTE: Turns out that I've had it backwards and that this is actually their debut! Thanks to those that offered a correction...

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THIS AND SO MANY OTHER GREAT POSTS.
ReplyDeleteI don't mean to shout, but I just wanted to express that your efforts and continuing generosity are not going unappreciated here in NYC.
thx, vdoandsound - another wonderful record you are sharing here! only have their self-titled 1986 release, which is moving. your announcement of yet another one coming soon - the debut - is highly appreciated!!
ReplyDeleteThat's really an impressive all-star line-up, looking forward to hearing this. You are a dear! And, you are really going to bring up an album of Uludag? Perfect! Only know their track on the "Classical Guide to No Man's Land" compilation, which I posted on my blog. (Who's understanding it right, Lucky or me? Were you speaking about the debut of Gestalt et Jive or the debut of Uludag?)

ReplyDeletesd - it must be uludag, since this one by gestalt et jive IS their debut, according to alred harth's website http://tinyurl.com/yr8m48
ReplyDeletecheers
Yup...it's true...evidently, I've had the whole thing ass-backward in my head from the start, having spent some 15 or so years thinking "Nouvelle Cuisine" was their second album, but nope...it's actually their debut and the double-album with Hollinger is their follow-up. That one'll go up tomorrow. I'll correct the info in this post accordingly.
ReplyDeleteSpring Day-Uludag was posted by mysteryposter late last year:

well, it's not likely that the 2nd album by a group is self-titled, while the 1st isn't... so it goes.
ReplyDeletethanks muchly, vdo! v. estragon, as well as cassiber, goebbels/harth and similar things in that vein sure are all too rare...
...and the mysteryposter link is still up! Thanks for the direction - I had not discovered blogland yet by then, so I would have entirely missed this without your kind help.
