FLOH DE COLOGNE-FLEISSBANDBABY'S BEAT SHOW, LP, 1970, GERMANY, NWW LIST

Both the strongest and strangest release by this peculiar German anarcho-politico crew (oft mentioned in the same breath as as like-minded contemporaries Checkpoint Charlie, Ton Steiene Scherben and Kollektiv Rote Rube), Fliessbandbaby's Beat Show is a somewhat tricky album to try and explain the appeal of, with garage psych/beat rock ramalamma colliding with tongue in cheek schlager, but all arranged in an explicitly dadaist and piss-takey manner (probably improved further if, unlike me, you understand the German language). There's no good reason why this should necessarily be a compelling mix, but there's a decided x-factor at play that manages to transmogrify the intentionally schlocky and slight into something entirely winning.

  1. Brilliant! I love these guys. And you're right, it's hard to explain their appeal. It's like strange hippie political vaudeville.
