A. MORE (ANTHONY MOORE)-FLYING DOESN'T HELP, LP, 1979, UK
Ex-Slapp Happy/Henry Cow member Anthony Moore (here mysteriously re-christened A. More) was one of the many ex-Cow personnel who took up the post punk/new wave baton with a vengeance when that era rolled around (all brilliantly to one degree or another, BTW), though his engagement with the zeitgeist manifested itself in a rather more art poppy guise than some of his R.I.O. brethren in Henry Cow; something that could be expected from a musician who plied such luscious and frothy work with Slapp Happy. While not without it's missteps, there are a handful of profoundly memorable cuts contained herein, perhaps none more so than his stark and jagged version of "War" from Henry Cow's "In Praise Of Learning", which sits at a dramatic right angle from it's original form and bears a striking resemblance to the most dissonant and agressive bits of Morgan Fisher's Hybrid Kids (circa "Claws"). Elsewhere, a decided XTC angle is at play, a sensibility I'll happily celebrate and one that caps with the gorgeous "Judy Get Down". His second LP "World Service" will follow soon...
