TERRY-ROJVI, LP, 19??, USA
This loner acid folk-into psych curio came down the collector pike along with a companion piece by Jim Collins And The High Mass (which I'll include with my next batch of posts), both of 'em sans any pertinent info whatsoever. I've yet to find anyone online or elsewhere that seems to have the real scoop on these releases; the timelessly odd nature of their contents rendering a clear "read" on it's cultural context difficult. it might be new material. It might be newly released archival material. Or it might be that a cache of old copies were found and spread through the collector network (Chris Freeman at Fusetron guesses that these date from the early 90's). An uneven but sometimes hair-raising record, the true depths of this album eluded me at first, as the rather prosaic nature of the singer/songwriter structures that initially hem in these tracks suggest little of the creeping weirdity that leaks (and later spills) into his compositions as the album progresses and the plot thickens. "Clown Clouds" and "What A Day" (the two best and longest cuts here...roughly half the album) find introspective acid folk themes thrumming and cycling before being subsumed under gossamer residues of protoplasmic/ placental psychotropic space gloop on the former and resounding organ drones, fore-grounded rhythmic perambulations and electronic treatments swaddling Terry's escalating gruff vocal histrionics on the latter to supremely memorable ends. It's an insular, brooding and sometimes ponderous sound world that Terry engenders here and it's not always one that's 100% inviting, but the hot shit half will send your head spinning nevertheless.
***************NEW LINK POSTED OCTOBER 2012***************
Get it here
wow, another treasure that YOU have...
ReplyDeletehere is link to Tommy Roundtree - Jungle Blood LP, somehow connected with Terry - Rojvi LP...
"Got a total mystery release on our hands here. A box of this extremely obscure contemporary private press album turned up at VT HQ with virtually no accompanying information whatsoever and a cover that featured no details except a hand-stamped sleeve that read: Tommy Roundtree Jungle Blood. The sonics were pretty amazing, with a singular soul-bleeding piano, vocal and occasional guitar style that seemed to conflate the lysergic Southern preacher style of legendary private press sides like the Terry and Music Performed By The High Mass LPs with the kind of highly personal gallows ballad style of Diamanda Galas and aspects of Jandek and Dylan. There was also a weird old-timey vaudeville aspect to some of the songs that felt a little like Micah Blue Smaldone alongside some extremely distressed lyrics of the calibre of “Every day I wake I want to slit my throat.” What’s more there doesn’t seem to be a single shred of information on Roundtree anywhere on the internet and no Myspace, Facebook or blog entry is always a big plus in terms of VT stature as well as a pretty amazing achievement this far into the game. Indeed, it ticks all the right buttons in terms of highly personal I-Stand-Alone style private press satori and has the potential to become a heavy rarity in years to come. I have been living inside it for weeks already. Recommended."----Volcanic Tongue
Supposedly all these releases are the product of a bunch of guys from Chicago - another one just out is an LP by 'Arian Sample'.
ReplyDeleteThe 'Boots/C.C/Snake & Remus' boxset reissue release from HP Cycle a coupla years ago is also allegedy related to the same scene??
Or maybe it's all just a hype to get collectors interested ;)
THANKS!! YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!!! I'M HEAPING A HEAVENLY ABUNDANCE OF "THANK YOU'S" INTO INFINITY FOR ALL THE GREAT MUSIC!!!
ReplyDeleteP.S. ...CHEERS!!
Top job... The Tommy Roundtree is a winner picked it up from VT... Would be keen to hear 'Arian Sample' if anyone knows where to get one... the vinyl that is.
ReplyDeleteRoll on the High Mass..!
Flapper..!
Don't care where it comes from - this is stunning. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteToo bad the rip is 320. What a waste of hard drive space. Try the V0 switch (240) or 256, like what Eric uses. That's plenty. Anything above 256 bit rate and there's no greater fidelity, so it's just a waste of hard drive space.
ReplyDeletehi, this one is terrific ! I can't wait to hear the High Mass.
ReplyDeleteIf someone reads this I'm deperately in search of information about an english singer-songwriter named John Willimas (which doesn't help the search of course !) who made one album on Columbia in 1967 and a pair of singles...and I'd like to hear it of course !
thanks !
Terry LP was great. Can't wait to hear the Jim Collins LP. Thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteVery similar, production-wise, to DAVID GRUBBS' THE THICKET from 1998... so I wonder if the Chicago hipster hoax theory holds up... Not to mention the possible intentional lyrical joke "I was born in a hole, big n' black..."
ReplyDeleteNonetheless, this is a strong, beautiful record. Can't wait to hear the Jim Collins LP.
Oops. I was actually thinking of 2000's THE SPECTRUM BETWEEN not THE THICKET.
ReplyDeleteIf you listen closely to SPECTRUM BETWEEN and the TERRY LP you'll notice a lot of similarities... word interplay, sporadic guitar, sparse drumming, production quality... The only thing noticeably different is the vocals.
Give both a listen, comparing the two. I'd like to hear what someone else thinks.

By the way, I'm not saying IT IS David Grubbs, just that both LP's mine similar terrain.
Here's some info if it will help:
ReplyDeleteI used to know this guy years ago when I lived in Hammond,La. He was a friend of the musician known as Damien Youth. He would sometimes collaborate with Youth back in the late 80s and early 90s.
He later moved to Chicago and formed Blackberry Records sometime in the 90s. Blackberry released one Lp by Damien Youth, one by Magic Island plus a couple others. These are very rare now!
I believe Magic Island is also by this artist who is neither named Terry or Jim Collins. This guy changes his name with every release so there are probably others by him floating around. I think Magic Island might have been a collaboration with D.Youth.
Hope this helped a little.
Whew!
ReplyDeletethis is amazing stuff!! Look forward to more of its ilk!!
thanks!!
Thanks a lot for posting this!
ReplyDeleteIs there any chance you could re post The Department Store Santas record which you had up a while back - I've heard nothing but great things about it.

ReplyDeletehere is terry - rojvi lp reup and above mentioned Arian Sample self-titled LP
ReplyDeletereview:
Scored a tiny amount of this already legendary modern private press LP, the unofficial companion LP to the Tommy Roundtree LP that VT scored late last year. This one is more guitar-heavy than the piano-led Roundtree side, with some malevolent, apocalyptic blues forms that cross Jandek-style breakdowns with blasted country (with vocals that pretty much cement the connection between these two discs and the whole Jim Collins/Terry axis) and a nicely weird use of tapes. Even better than the Roundtree, but you better make it fast.---volcanic tongue
