C.E.D.S.-XANDOSIS, TAPE, 1981, USA

Quintessential arcane mystery mulch from the deepest recesses of 80's underground tape culture, courtesy of blog friend Brad Laner, whom all queries regarding this one should be addressed to, as anyone trying to glean info on the cryptic characters responsible for these two extended bouts of narcotized bloop and scrabble (beyond their L.A. origins evidenced by their contact address on the insert) would be left wanting. Not a whiff of their one-time existence is to be found anywhere. The flat tire cyclical flop of The Freshly Wrapped Candies and This Heat testcard patches of morse coded malevolence could both be said to vaguely signpost the coordinates of the quizzical sonic purgatory that is Xandosis. C.E.D.S. might fall short of the two mighty aforementioned outfits (few wouldn't), but their burbling pit of brain addling ennui is one I'd be glad to be stuck in indefinitely.

Note: Despite umpteen attempts, Massmirror mysteriously refused to work for this particular upload, so I've used Xirror instead in this one instance.

UPDATE: IT SEEMS THAT I SOMEHOW AMAZINGLY OVERLOOKED THE NAMES CLEARLY VISIBLE ON THE PHOTOS, AS IT TOOK BRAD TO POINT OUT TO THICK 'OL ME THAT THIS WAS A PROJECT FEATURING SOME HEAVY DUTY L.A. SCENE LEGENDS, NOST NOTABLY EX-GERM DON BOLLES, WHO IS HERE FEATURED ALONGSIDE DINAH CANCER AND FUTURE DREAM SYNDICATE MEMBER PAUL CUTLER, WHO WERE HIS BANDMATES IN 45 GRAVE AT THE TIME THAT C.E.D.S. WAS RECORDED, WHICH THIS DATES FROM THE EARLIEST ERA OF. DESPITE THE L.A. CONTACT ADDRESS, YOU'LL NOTICE THAT IT SAYS "RECORDED IN PAUL'S UTILITY SHED, PHOENIX, ARIZONA", EVIDENTLY C.E.D.S. BEING THE BYPRODUCT OF SOME DRUG ADDLED DOWNTIME FROM 45 GRAVE'S WOODSHEDDING PERIOD IN ARIZONA BEFORE THEIR EMERGENCE ON THE L.A. SCENE.

  5. Well, I'll be the first to actually comment on the C.E.D.S. album, then. Sounds like Nurse With Wound pushed past Stephen Stapleton's most damaged point. Lovely in every way and obviously rare as pig's sweat. Keep up the good work.

    Be seeing you.

  7. That's not Jim's problem. 16 Forever didn't use to be invite only and it's probably been a while since he's been to that blog and that's why he didn't know it's invite only now. Sometimes things change.

  12. Oh man, you guys aren't going to believe this one: I HAD THIS TAPE at one time, it got eaten, as all rarities seem to must. I never thought I'd hear it again. I got pretty good at resurrecting eaten tape but not this one. Like you, I know little about them but I was into "hey, this looks weird, I should get it".

  13. Thinking.....anyone live in LA?

Anyone shed any light on the current or past residents of the address included in the cassette?

It would be interesting to find out the responsible parties thoughts on this some twenty years later.

If I remember right, this ended up coming my way because I was constantly attending record shows and if something looked interesting I'd somehow end up with it.

I also have some other weird tapes that might be of interest but finding them will be a challenge. Thousands.

  14. Interesting. 495 Westmount seems to show them being at the corner of a roundabout. Interesting.

  15. todd and the rest of you all-please see the update message on this post for an unravelling of the C.E.D.S. mystery (which proves to be none too mysterious for anyone with a set of eyes and working knowledge of L.A. underground sounds, as it turns out...)
