PROYECTO "A"-S/T, LP, 1970, SPAIN

Aesthetically situated somewhere between Vampiros Lesbos exploitation psych, Tropicalia acid shimmy, library music groove and Massiera's haunted funhouse, this brain burning and exceedingly obscure Spanish marvel (evidently some sorta concept album about the planets of our solar system) has systematically reduced some of the most heavyweight collectors of my acquaintance to spluttering and drooling in disbelief upon exposure. Your new favorite album...I shit you not.

  4. Straight from the source, huh? That's pretty durn cool! I'd heard of this album but I'm not capable of the $300 price tag that a GEMM vendor currently has it at...
    ...so once again, much thanks.

  5. info courtesy of spanishprogressiverock.blogspot.com:

Josep "Kitflus" Mas' (ex-Iceberg, ex-Pegasus and usual contributor of Joan Manuel Serrat, among many others) first band. The band broke up after releasing this only album. He was 16 then.

The following information has been provided by courtesy of Electrofuzzer of Sonidos En Órbita:

"PROYECTO "a" is an album masterminded by Frank David, aka Frank Dubé. The names of the musicians involved are unknown (apart from Kitflus), since they all used pseudonyms. I spent 120 € on a promo copy of the LP and 17 € on a single. It's a sensational album.

The album was recorded at the RCA studios un Madrid, yet most of the session musicians hailed from Barcelona. It was recorded in '69 and released one year later; in 1971 the single "A Plutón" (To Pluton) was released with alternative lyrics, replacing the word "Plutón" (Pluton) with "Putón" (whore or slut).

In 1971 Frank David goes to Germany to make an electronic album called Blues And Electronics under the "The Frank David Selection" monniker, with Herb Geller and Okko Becker (of OKKO Sitar & Electronics fame) on the moog. The album was released on the defunct BASF label. I'll upload it to my blog, "Espacios Sonoros".

I will upload my copy of Proyecto "A" as well, since it is a promo in mint shape, with gatefold cover, as well as the two tracks on the single.

Another anecdote: I know Frank personally and he told me he did a 11 minute short movie in 1970 called Proyecto A, with a super8. It featured Andrés Do Barro and Encarnita Polo and it looked like that famous Syd Barrett's trip short film."

Vinyl rip, never issued on CD. Two rips from two different LP's have been uploaded: one encoded at 256 and another one at 320. Link in comments.

  15. Hi,
May I ask you to share a great French album by guitarist of French Theatrical Prog band Ange?

    It's:

    Michel Moulinie (France)
    Chrysalide (1978)

    Thanks in advance.
    Zalman.

  17. After the build-up in the blogblurb, I figured this would have a hard time living up to expectations. Somewhere along the journey 'round Mercury, though, it really started settling in how freakin' groovy this baby is. Thanks for this gem.
    Peace,
    Zilla

  21. For those who mentioned encountering a password prompt, I tested out a download of this on a PC to see if it was some sort of weird mac vs. PC issue, but it opened fine for me on both systems, with no passwords asked for (which there shouldn't be, as we never use them). I'm really stumped by this, though most seem to be opening this with no issues, given the number of downloads this file has seen. I dunno...

Andy...thanks for providing that info! Greatly appreciated, as was the link to the Frank David LP and, indeed, the unbelievable blog it appears on (http://36-15-moog.blogspot.com), which is easily the best resource for library LP's I've ever encountered!

Nenad...yeah...seems it's now worth something in that neighborhood. Dunno what I specifically paid for it, as it was part of one giant lot of several hundred LP's I bought from Stapleton.

  23. Your description of "situated somewhere between Vampiros Lesbos exploitation psych, Tropicalia acid shimmy, library music groove and Massiera's haunted funhouse," seems like a very roundabout way of saying "it sounds like Gong channeling a 2nd rate Chicago Transit Authority" but I guess those reference points aren't obscure enough for this blog.

Don't get me wrong-- I dig this LP, and I'm very grateful it is posted here. In fact, I get off on most of it, but when the horns come in I get very annoyed-- those horn arrangements are just so bland, like they are aping some amateurish soul band, but maybe that is the point-- it adds more tropicalia-styled silliness to the mix.

It doesn't blow me away as much as other posts here, but of course it's all a matter of taste (and how could "Your new favorite album...I shit you not" be expected to ring true for everybody?)

Still-- many thanks for this and all your posts.

  24. For all those having password issues on WindowsXP, if you just 'skip file' on the password protected files when extracting with the inbuilt zip extraction tool (NOT winrar etc), the MP3s come through fine. It seems like the artwork doesn't extract, but it's a small price to pay for such a great album.

Many many thanks to Mutant Sounds; work would be dull and boring without the injections of aural stimulation that you provide!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Aha, so thats what the problem was :) I didnt realise it was just the artwork that was passworded.

Yep, this is a pretty badass album. Lots of cool stuff going on, nice brass section too.
It doesnt sound anything like gong btw.

    ReplyDelete
  26. No, the artwork DOES NOT require a password! None of the files on Mutant Sounds use passwords! Grrr. :O)

  37. As always, Mutant Sounds rocks! This album is quite interesting, the melodies are really good... Now: is it me or the bass base in track 5 (Saturno) is a rip off from Beatles' Day Tripper?

Not criticizing in fact, there are good and bad rip offs... this one's good though :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. One more info: the lyrics talk not about the planets themselves but rather about the Roman gods: Jupiter, Saturno, Mercurio, etc. and they are pretty interesting and well crafted, reminding a little bit to Joaquín Sabina.

    Big thanks!
