SHAREBEE ISSUES

It appears that certain Sharebee links are now generating pop-up malware warnings, evidently generated from one of the sites that one of their third-party advertisers could potentially land you on. Matt (Electric Voodoo) just discovered a handful of titles that seem to be doing this, and in investigating further I've located a few others. I'll be digging around further over the next few days to see just how pervasive this problem is and replacing those links that generate malware warnings as I go with Rapidshare ones. Ultimately, I may have to just replace all the extant Sharebee links on my posts if this situation proves to be affecting more than a handful of them, but whatever the case, it's impossible to imagine using their service any longer after this kind of BS. Yikes.....

  1. The sharebee links also often redirect to an advertisement after several seconds which doesn't have a back option. Their advertising has really been undermining their service lately. It would be nice to keep on with a RS alternative though, its difficult to download anything on a shared network with multiple people using rapidshare alongside the waits. Thanks for all the hard work that goes into maintaining this place.

  2. Mediafire is forward!

  3. With javascript turned off I'm pretty fine with sharebee. And, according to the history your 'filehoster xy-issue' posts these things can happen anywhere and anytime ;-).
So come on people, time to use firefox-noscript+adblock!

  4. Mediafire (for files <100 MB) and Megaupload (for files >100 MB) are the only two uploading sites I use. Both are very fast, have little advertising, and don't have malware.

Rapidshare is great if you pay for the service, but the free version is terribly slow.

  5. Megaupload has recently been (sometimes) causing this (malware issue), as well.
    Not much problem w/ Mediafire

  6. Anyone who suggests Mediafire to Eric obviously hasn't been a visitor to this blog very long! :O)

  8. I'm a fan of mediafire as well - no problems whatsoever, and if the album is bigger than 100 MB, split it onto several zips or rars.

I would suggest (and kindly ask for) the move onto mediafire!

  9. I agree with Pedro Homero, i began with Rapidshare, but they often change their way of download to force people getting premium account (15mn waiting, limited bandwith, premium points, an so on)... Mediafire is quite friendly and the links are available as long as the uploader log on his account!

  10. Hi. I've just seen your 'want list' asking for (amongst other) scans of Atem fanzine from the 70s.

I have many of them and could scan them for you. How can I contact you another way than putting a comment on a post which has no relation ?
(and I have to be anonymous here...!!)

  11. Yeah, I concur with the positive Mediafire sentiments, they seem cool. I have also noticed the Malware popups from Sharebee in the past. It goes to a pop up page after you click the downloader of your choice from the list and that usually then triggers the malware. It was a good place at one time, but this is pretty wicked.

  14. Has anyone had any experience with Adrive? World Service blog uses it sometimes and it seems okay. The ads aren't problematic. His oldest links (from six months ago) still work. Might be worth looking into.

  15. Yes,
It wasn't through this site but another one. The Sharabee link gave me a trojan (luckily my anti virus eliminated it or so it says).
    Not fun.

  17. @Anonymous and everyone in genreal:

Most of the threats detected are crappy pop up ads. Annoying... but nothing that will fry your computer. Certain Megupload pages have been exploited though... and offer a suspicious exie download before the actual file download.

As a pretty long time media grabber... all I can say is be careful and you won't get bit. Pop Ups are often turned on by little nasty critters that take over your computer for a milisecond... but they're harmless. Just going on an d/l expedition, however, and careleesly clicking on some Exie or this DRM virus I heard about (never seen) will.

Download your rar containers... but inspect and scan them before opening. If you open with WinRAR (i.e. don't just EXTRACT HERE) it will show the contents. I know this is 101 type shit... but people seem scared, so I thought I'd give the lecture.

  18. I've been seeing them too. Fortunately my anti-virus software seems to be doing its job. The third party advertising on some of the down/upload service providers is really annoying, especially with their popups and automatically openning up other webpages. The 3rd party advertisers seem to be sketchy skyware laden stuff. Best avoided.

  19. Yeah, recently a Sharebee page snuck me-- it instantly loaded some malicious fake anti-spyware spyware via a pop-up...it was a pain in the butt to remove. I don't know what they're thinking over there.

Anyway, I love Mutant Sounds! Good luck finding a better file hoster!

  20. I don't know if mediafire would be a good idea guys. I don't know about now but they have a history of randomly deleting "copy righted materiel" regardless how obscure it is/if anyone actually complained or not.

    ReplyDelete
  21. @Kristina: the solution some have come up with for the random deletions is encrypting their .rar archive titles. The most functional ways I've seen are writing the title backwards or translating it into leetspeak.

    Just a thought.

  22. So glad I don't need to deal with these issues since I only share stuff I own the copyright on.

Those labels and artists that try to thwart sharing are doing themselves a disservice.

Particularly for the kind of stuff shared around here.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Would FileDucky or RapidSpread be acceptable file spreading services. I hate to see Sharebee replaced with a single source rather than a spreading service.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Well... just 'bout Atem fanzine... share the stuff! a little bit constructive and definitively less dangerous than sending a 9mm bullet to our beloved french politicians !

I'll be glad to read that kind of paper !

  26. I'd support the use of two upload services, megaupload and rapidshare (even if rapidshare sucks).

To solve the problems with free user/non premium/limited downloading, just install an automatic downloader. It works by pasting the link in the soft, then the soft manages everything automatically, and let's say, after 24 hours you've downloaded 2 gb from rapidshare alone.

I have installed JDownloader, I quite dislike Java stuff, but this one works really well (if anyone can recommend a java-less one) for about 60 hosts. Since that time I don't bother anymore, I just copy RS & MU link, queue them, and a few hours later, I can listen to the albums.

My advice to the blog owner. By the way, amazing work Jim, thanks a lot :D

  28. I personally let out a breath of fresh air when I come upon Mediafire links. Same for Mega..

Rapid is Ok. . but of course dont like the 15 min wait. (no big deal)

Have had zero luck with Zshare

DivShare however seems fairly friendly, quick, and problem free.

    .02 cents

  30. Oh I saw this on Sharebee.com page, maybe we dont have to change it afterall.

About Sharebee: Attention: We have received many emails lately regarding the quality of the popup ads, we have decided to replace it! More coming..

  31. I've been having a different problem with Sharebee links. I can't even get as far as the nasty pop ups because as soon as I click on the link my pc asks me where my disc containing Microsoft Office Professional 2000 is. Of course I have a (non pro) later version on my machine and I certainly don't want to mess things up by d/l -ing an on line source just for an album d/l. So is it just me or has anyone else seen this? Never used to happen.
For my money - as far as the great debate goes - I pay for a Premier acc w/ Rapidshare and I'm more than happy. No ads, no waiting and there's more than enough material if you kick over the mulch on Mutant Sounds alone to make it value for money.
I for one would be very happy for you guys to lose Sharebee.
In any event Many Thanks for all the hard work.
