SOLID EYE-FRUITS OF AUTOMATION, CD, 1999, USA

'Tis a pity that the latter day doings of L.A.Free Music Society personnel have never garnered the critical or collectible cache of their 70's era work, as you'd be hard pressed to find a finer piece of audio surrealism lurking in the L.A.F.M.S. back catalog than this sick apex of absurdist fuckery, Solid Eye (aka Rick Potts, Joseph Hammer and Steve Thomsen, whom I've posted several titles by both collectively and individually in the past) having truly hit their stride with this one. Has there ever been another recording of electronic weirdity that so perfectly mirrored a Rube Goldberg device? Feel free to answer that question yourselves after being pumped, pressed, stamped and extruded through the cartoon gears of this brilliantly ludicrous sonic machinery.

  6. I used to work with Rick in the jazz room at Amoeba music and, at the time, he told me this was their best record. I bought my L.A.F.M.S. box direct from him, and even though I love it, I feel that their newer stuff eclipses the past. Cheers.

  7. How to describe Fruits of Automation: Remember the sound machines make in movies when they're just about to blow up? That's "Gigantor." Do you know the grating noise a saw makes if you leave it on for three hours straight? That's "Gort." Experimenting with industrial and disturbingly antiseptic soundscapes, Solid Eye have managed to create some of the most far-out, disjointed, non-musical music of the '90s (and possibly beyond). Upon first listen, the record is thought-provoking -- inducing both giddiness and shock -- while further listenings cause confusion and uncertainty. ~ Steven Kurutz, All Music Guide

    rated 2,5 stars!!!

quite a long story how this record got made(in a real studio helmed by Tom Grimley on 16 tx tape) and how it never saw any real distro. even rrron was unaware of its existence until fairly recently.
