DAVID MOSS/BAIRD HERSEY-COESSENTIAL, LP, 1977, USA
A damn rare and little known early treasure from dazzling improv drummer David Moss, whose albums have been shared elsewhere on MS. Coessential features his signature cockeyed conniption fits and collapsing rhythmic densities, though his glossolalian vocal theatrics are kept more in check than usual as sparring partner Baird Hersey lays out acidic string tangles and charred low volume slow burns triggering everything from unexpectedly delicate gamelan-like textural accumulations to concentrated explosions from him and ultimately landing the two of 'em in an atypical and entirely mindblowing round of Dzyan cum Terje Rypdal lysergic astral jazz.

Magnificent. It started out feeling a little mannered and academic, but quickly stretched out into very inspired territory indeed!
ReplyDeleteHersey's jazz-rock LPs are strangely slept-on, especially by hip-hop "beat diggers" who I thought would've picked up on the sinister funk grooves on those LPs by now. Although I can see ignoring "Lookin' For That Groove" once you see the corny cover art-- looks like a smooth singer-songwriter album, not Miles-influenced funk (also featuring percussion solos by David Moss.)
