J. BONE CRO-FOR CRYIN' OUT LOUD, LP, 1996, USA

Freak folk before the term existed, this squirrelly and slightly unhinged character was a confrere and accomplice of my bandmate Matt Castille during the early era of Vas Deferens Organization, as well as being one of several freaky residents at the Belmont St. Dallas address where all the early VDO material was recorded. A libertine celebrant of both the acid fried and the trailer trash squalid, J. back in the day could be found throwing acid trip parties built around showing a double feature of Convoy and Urban Cowboy or coming up with strategies for "vagrant porn" magazines involving toothless winos. What the before mentioned won't clue you into however is J.'s capacity for soul nourishing and deep-in-the-pudding psych pop "knowing", a skill set exacerbated by Matt's down-the-rabbithole psychedelic production and one that glances off of both the side of Kevin Ayers heard on "Clarence In Wonderland" and elements of Skip Spence's "Oar". During this early stage of my work with VDO, my (Eric's) work together with J. was limited to the VDO side-project Jaloppy (previously posted), with Matt being the fellow twisting the knobs on this platter; one co-released by the legendary (and normally much more genre formal) psych label Rockadelic Records. Some of the shimmering sunshine-y pop psych bits that periodically bob to the surface through these wafting kosmiche heat mirages manage to glance off of the hymen of relative song structured normalcy in such a way that they wouldn't have sounded out of place amongst the Elephant 6 Collective, only to unravel into a puddle of talk-boxed Doo Rag-like acid blues and half machine lip moves with J. waxing rhapsodic about jailhouse sex.

  7. Jeez how great this is. What number release was this on rockadelic records? I thought I had them all. Can you please post another JBone Kro. Is that the same Jaloppy guy? Nice tunes. Also, do you have Dark Shadows to post?

  10. Anonymous and Lonnie-There are three J Bone albums (and yes, this is the same guy from Jaloppy). The first is The Songs Aliens Left Behind CD. Second is For Cryin' Out Loud LP. Third is Late Nite Songs For Truckers And Fuckers LP/CD. I'd planned on asking Jay about posting Late Nite Songs (also produced by Matt) at some point in the future.

Regarding Rockadelic catalog numbers, For Cryin' Out Loud wasn't assigned one for some reason (maybe because it was a co-release with J.'s Womb Tunes label?). It's place within the Rockadelic discography can be seen Here

Dark Shadows-Cold Sun has been posted on about ten other blogs. Shouldn't be hard to find. Killer record, that. Dark Shadows, Dragonwyck and Kennelmus were the best of the non-J. Bone fare on Rockadelic for me, though VDO's original guitarist Jim Edgerton (Saturation, Zyzzybaloubah, Tilt?, Drug Bubbles, Sound's Screaming Zenith, J. Bone's Late Nite Songs) was a Rockadelic mainstay, being the guitarist behind two of their retro-psych units Fish Eye Lens and Burnin' Rain as well as fellow Dallas psych scene movers The Other Side.

  11. and a small correction to the above, as Jim actually plays on both Sound albums and not just Screaming Zenith...

  12. Thanks for clearing that up. I want all of it. I think Jay is Brilliant. His songwriting and sound was "Ariel Pink" Before "Ariel Pink" Way before. Jay is the grand daddy of chillwave AND VDO as a matter of fact. Funny how the public at large can coin terms for stuff like Jays work which has beed out there for years! UNReal. I hope Jay Bone and VDO Finally get there credit. Maybe after there dead.

He listed his e-mail for contact in the previous comments as: jbonecro@gmail.com

...or you can list yourself as an available girl on Craig's List and he may call you!

Buy his record. Support an artist.
