MUTANT SOUNDS IN THE WIRE MAGAZINE

Fans of Mutant Sounds should keep a look out for the new December issue of The Wire Magazine due out on Nov. 10, which will feature my (Eric Lumbleau's) contribution to their ongoing (and rather damningly named) column Collateral Damage, devoted to probing the various sides of the debate around the issue of the free sharing of music and its repercussions; a discussion that has so far seen the likes of Chris Cutler, Robin Rimbaud & Bob Ostertag weighing in.

Which kind of deal with an upload platform your had make? How many money you just make with this blog?? And "The Wire is a "bible" for hype-peoples(fashion-mafia!), but talking about "arte/culture", dear reader look behind. Don't believe?

  2. Just got the issue through the door and that's how I heard about you guys! Really interesting. I've got lots of listening to do now.

  3. Pol-Pat-It looks like your thinking is as constricted as your asshole that currently has a bug up it. The merest flicker of intelligence on your part would be all that is required to note that if either Jim or I had ever monetized this blog, ads would be visible, unless of course you consider letting people know roughly once a year that I'm selling rare records on ebay as monetizing the blog. That's apparently been the argument all along of a certain little man over at the blog that you've linked to, but then this is a fellow who has such incredible penis size issues about his similar but much smaller blog that, having once been publicly complimented by me by including his blog in a list of the five best ones for a magazine, he's made it his his sworn duty to spread lies about me ever since. This is called pettiness, an emotion that I'm sure you're only too familiar with.

  4. Nice one VDOANDSOUND!!!! I would not care if you were making money anyway, you are doing the world a service and I'm sure this takes a lot of time. Besides all this stuff is out of print and you give away your own stuff a lot of the time.

  5. Sorry Pol-Pat, but the first sentence in your article already makes it clear, that it can't be applied to mutant sounds, since it is still one of the greatest and most interesting blogs for music on the internet, constantly surprising people with wonderful stuff not available anywhere else.
Perhaps you need to just let it go. This grudge seems ridiculous.

  16. After reading this comment. It got me thinking since I visit here everyday. Anyone with half a brian can do a little research and contact Megaupload to find out if there is money being made off of these uploaded files associated with this account. Nope, no money being made by uploads so says Megaupload. So If you try to claim that these people are making money off of the uploads to Megaupload you are dead wrong. Also checked on Rapidshare from the old posts and same thing- NO money being made. Next time before you go accusing someone do your research, its not that hard to do!

  23. Ok, you don't make money. Don't forget it was a question !!
Real GREAT WORK makes many people of the diy/homemade and netlabel-scene.
    This is enthusiasm.
You make the service for the music industry and get attention. Of course.
For luck we have today internet with his possibilities and the power of the music jornalism is falling down and it's good.
I don't need this selftitled popes of music, which are slaves/prostitutes of the industry of music/communication etc.
And sorry, I don't have your intellectual standard like:
"as your asshole that currently has a bug....., ...who has such incredible penis size issues about his similar but much smaller blog..., ...go fuck yourself".
I hope you get more sensation for your ego, you need it really.

To everybody, have nice days and keep your hate against real important things.

P.S.: "We are the prostitutes of pop music..." (DAF)
Have a look for the book
"Rock 'n' Roll is here to pay" from Steve Chapple /Reebee Garofalo (1977).
It's about the history and politics of the music industry. Maybe than you understand.

  26. Thank you for the engaging article - one of the best so far in the collateral damage series, for sure. The central argument that access creates the potential to undo bogus narratives is spot on.

The vibrant musical landscapes of the past can never be accurately represented by the wall hangings of your local Hard Rock Cafe, or in
The Rolling Stone/Trouser Press rock-centric versions of history as most have come to know it.

  27. Very interesting article Eric. One thing that tends to happen with this debate is that people feel they have to come down on one side or the other – either passionately for or against downloading whereas as your Wire article suggests it is more a case that the very digitization of music has changed the landscape altogether.
One thing is clear though and that is that the heyday of the music industry represented a time when a few companies controlled the means of production and distribution. A relatively small number of artists were promoted and as price was in effect fixed there were huge profits to be made. Back in 1972 LPs in the UK sold for £2.50, which equates to roughly £25 now. The consequence was that even the keenest person had by today’s standards quite small record collections. Not only was there relatively little music promoted by the majors often the only way of hearing experimental or avant music was to buy a copy- so hearing new music meant spending a lot of dosh. I had one friend who was permanently in debt in the 1980s as he used to go down to Rough Trade each week and buy 3 or 4 records. All of the profits of course paid for lavish recording studios, fat record exec drug bills, mansions in the country and so on. On the plus side it also helped support a network of record shops.
So a very positive consequence of the digital download is that all music is far more available and especially avant/experimental music. As Eric says in time this dissemination will help people to rewrite the canon of music shifting it away from the safe trajectory and bogus narratives still so evident in many books being published now.
Of course there are downsides. Whilst no one will weep for Lady GaGa missing out on a few sales through people downloading at the other end of the spectrum it is getting hard to sell even 3-500 copies of many LPs as people just fall out of the habit of buying music in the way they used to. For the alternative or avant musician this really rules out using any kind of studio. Not a problem for most but it does preclude certain types of activity. If people paid even £1-2 per LP length download this could provide an income stream for artists that would facilitate all kinds of activities.

  32. without mutant sounds I would probably kill myself for leading a dumb and meaningless life but then again I would be too dumb to realize it so I would just keep on living my dumb and meaningless life. the cycle of death and stupidity that is only broken by mutant sounds. thank you for the music.
