BRAD LANER-MICRO-AWAKENINGS, PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED, RECORDED: 2004-2009, USA

Though never realized in its originally proposed incarnation as a double LP set earmarked for our old label Free Dope And Fucking In The Streets (the precursor to our current Puer Gravy imprint) for reasons to complicated to entail, this remarkable outing from trans-generational underground music icon and Mutant fixture Brad Laner (Medicine, Steaming Coils, Savage Republic, Electric Company and about 100 more since 1982) has now been green-lit to share with you in an awesome gesture of Mutant solidarity from Mr. Laner.

Originally laid out in suite formation, these pieces have now been re-imagined as 61 inter-linked but free standing musical mosaic tiles, with Micro-Awakenings fragmented approach to the art of composition extending back to the de-centered and jarring acidhead disjunction of The Faust Tapes, one of Brad's key childhood influences. Fast forwarding through several decades that have taken him from the furthest flung fringes of L.A. Free Music Society freak culture marginalia to the epicenter of indie scene reverence via his legendary noise pop unit Medicine before venturing off into the hinterlands of left-field electronica, Micro-Awakenings utilizes this cellular song format to create something part kaleidoscopic tapestry and part Rube Goldberg contraption. A million thanks to Brad for offering up this treasure chest to share with you!

note: In order to get my initial posts up by the end of the week as promised, I've decided to hoist these first three files on my own dropbox account and then migrate them over to the FMA later, once the i's are dotted and the t's crossed in setting everything up with them.

PRE-RELEASE ANNOUNCEMENT FOR VAS DEFERENS ORGANIZATION & BRAD LANER-TRANSCONTINENTAL CONSPIRACY-FULLY REMASTERED CD REISSUE WITH BONUS TRACK

In conjunction with the new Polish label Niklas, I'm pleased to finally announce the imminent CD re-release of the first of Vas Deferens Organization's two collaborations with Medicine/Steaming Coils/Electric Company mastermind Brad Laner. Transcontinental Conspiracy not only marked our first collaboration with Laner, but it also contains contributions from three members of the legendary Mercury Rev (Grasshopper, Suzanne Thorpe and Jason Russo). This 15 year anniversary edition has been dramatically remastered by Vas Deferens Organization and comes equipped with both an exclusive and brand new 10 minute VDO & Laner track from 2010 called Scheming Foils and with brand new packaging design courtesy of the fine folks at Niklas, who've made this all possible.

They've described this album thusly on their site: "An absolutely must-have avant-rock classic of the 90s., one of the best albums of its kind, where advanced studio sonic experimentation meets refined influences of Faust and Can, funk, electronics, breakbeats and Dadaist humour – and results in long, crazy, multi-layered suites – a quintesence of what we are now accustomed to call post-rock…"

You can download one minute long samples in full .wav audio of three of these tracks here, to give you a better sense of its remastered sound quality and to absorb what lies in wait with the bonus track.

The official release date for this CD is July 31st, 2011. It will be available at that date to order worldwide from Polish distributors Serpent. A list of further distributors will be made available on the Mutant Sounds announcement on the day of it's official release. Wholesale and distributor inquiries should be directed to Monotype Records.

A full press release for this album can be downloaded via the above Niklas link.

DEBT OF NATURE-RECORDINGS FROM LIVE PERFORMANCE 1984-1986, USA

Once described by Brad Laner to me as being his "garage band AMM", it's an amusing capsulization of the aesthetic of this improv squad he founded as a precocious teen, albeit one that fails to note just how exemplary D.O.N.'s sound was of the overarching L.A. Free Music Society sensibility (strong overtones of Le Forte Four's improv shenanigans circa "Spin 'n' Grin"), but then Laner's work of the era has always been mysteriously absent from both discographies and discussions of LA.F.M.S., despite his heading up the finest of all L.A.F.M.S. ensembles (read: Steaming Coils). These two lengthy cuts were cherry picked and re-arranged by Laner from the D.O.N. archives and according to him represent a composite of several different shows originating from performances at The Anticlub, Galleria Ocaso, Mission Furniture Co., Oranges/Sardines gallery, Cheap Racist gallery and Olio. Try this on for a cast of characters (in addition to Brad): Spencer Savage (Steaming Coils, Stay Home), James Grigsby (The Motor Totemist Guild), Rick Potts (Steaming Coils, Le Forte Four, Dinosaurs With Horns, Solid Eye) , Joseph Hammer (Steaming Coils, Dinosaurs With Horns, Solid Eye) , Tom Recchion (Doo-Dooettes, B-People), Jac Zinder (Stay Home), David Chrisman (Steaming Coils, Three Day Stubble), Lucija Kordic (To Nije Sala, What Makes Donna Twirl?), Jim Goodall (Severed Head In A Bag, Jon Wayne, Medicine), Earnest Beauvine (Jon Wayne) , Kraig Grady (Laner collaborator on Music From The Island Of Anaphoria), Cynthia Skovlin (part-time Steaming Coils contributor), Leo Vishmid, Greg Lloyd, David Van Brink, Mariska Leyysius and Greg McCourt. Whew! Howza 'bout dat, eh? As with the previously cited Le Forte Four, the improvs here exemplify an approach to the form that find the numinous in the ludicrous; power tools and kazoos engage in death matches with surreal splices of tape collage and belching and retching emerge from stormclouds of surging audio generator roars in this domain where dada is yahweh. Vas Deferens Organization & Brad Laner-Transcontinental Conspiracy/Electric Company& Vas Deferens Organization-More Pelvis Wick For The Baloney Boners

Well...'til now I've held fast to the notion that I wouldn't be using Mutant Sounds as a self-promotional tool, but as there's been a tremendous amount of interest in my postings of the work of Brad Laner (Steaming Coils, Savage Republic, Medicine, Electric Company), I thought it only fair to share the two albums that my band Vas Deferens Organization recorded with him. As a lifelong devotee of Steaming Coils, having the chance to collaborate with Brad was a dream come true for my bandmate Matt and myself and one of the creative highlights of my life so far, especially so in the case of "More Pelvis Wick...", which unlike it's predecessor was recorded together in the same room. I'll refrain from reviewing my own work here, which I think would be a mite tacky. Instead, I'll merely state that I presume that all visitors to Mutant Sounds have a good idea of my sensibility by now (as well as Brad's via the umpteen posts of his work here) and it's a sensibility that extends through to my musical work as well. So too, any Mercury Rev fans out there might be interested to know that both Grasshopper and Suzanne Thorpe appear on Transcontinental Conspiracy. Hope you all enjoy 'em...

NOTE: BLOGGER'S LIMITATIONS ON HOW MANY LETTERS CAN BE USED FOR A TITLE HEADING MEANT LEAVING OFF THE DATES FOR THESE ABOVE. TRANSCONTINENTAL IS FROM 1996, MORE PELVIS WICK FROM 1999.

ADDITIONAL NOTE: TRANSCONTINENTAL CONSPIRACY IS SOON DUE FOR REISSUE (DETAILS FORTHCOMING IN A BLOG POST DUE SOON), SO THE LINKS FOR THIS HAVE BEEN REMOVED.

GARY KAIL/ZURICH 1916-CREATIVE NIHILISM, 2xLP, 1984, USA

By turns obtuse, aimless and occasionally striking, this peculiar double album's appearance here is solely due to the approximately 10 minutes of tape collage contributions that future Steaming Coils mastermind Brad Laner brings to the proceedings on the tracks "Victim Of Affluence", "Looking For A Home", "Anti-Descriptive Titles" and "Confusion At The Intersection", which successfully nudge things into the fruitful territory Laner was concurrently exploring via his improv unit Debt Of Nature (soon to be posted here). The remainder comes courtesy of a rather unlikely candidate for an avant garde-ist: the guitarist for L.A. dumbo hardcore vets Anti. Yes, it seems Messr. Kail had a hankering for the esoteric under the harebrained hardcore posturings and manifested it with the help (at least on LP 2 of this set, where Kail + whoever else participated went under the moniker Zurich 1916) of both Laner and future Ethyl Meatplow/Geraldine Fibbers vocalist Carla Bozulich, along with a few folks unknown to me. Minus the support of more inspired outside parties, Kail's solo endeavors on LP 1 of the set vacillate between indiscriminate tape collage work, amp hum, sine wave skree, aimless gurgle and random field recordings, all reasonably desultory. That aside, Laner-philes have every reason to direct their attention here, as this is some of the more obscure and hard to find work in his discography and well worth a listen. Thanks to Brad for supplying the content of this post...

STAHLBAU-TODLICHT VERUNGLUCKT, TAPE, 1982 + DIE MACHT DER REICHEN, TAPE, 1983, USA

Gristly and cantankerous faux Neue Deutsche Welle sturm und drang (geniale dilettanten variety) kicked up by two snarky teen rogues from L.A. intent on conning the sub-underground (apparently successfully) into believing that they were a legit NDW outfit, having secured releases under this ruse with two notable cassette imprints of the era. That one of said teens was in fact a barely post-pubescent Brad Laner (Steaming Coils, Savage Republic, Medicine, Electric Company and the person we can thank for this post's contents) shifts Stahlbau from merely being an amusing subcultural anecdote to a historical artifact of some heft, chronicling the birth pangs of Laner's fried sensibility en route to his life changing work with Steaming Coils some 2-3 years later, nascent flashes of which flicker during some of the most compelling moments here, particularly on Die Macht Der Reichen. Throbbing Gristle seems as much of an influence here as do the likes of Einsturzende Neubauten, especially on Todlicht Verungluckt, which starts with fangs bared but midway through begins tapping into a richer vein of juddering surrealism and art rock fragmentation before winding down with a cover of Can's "Soul Desert". Die Macht Der Reichen ups the stakes and widens the reach substantially, with scrambled art punk gestures gasping for breath in turbid pools of post-industrial sediment, sooty side steps into tenebrous ambience and stark bursts of electronic fizzle and splut all competing for airtime. Stahlbau's other member Mike Fey (a teen music guru to Brad and a member of Debt Of Nature's second line-up) penned a fake interview with himself in the guise of Stahlbau's Matthias Faller (Brad was known as Bernd Leitz) for the L.A. underground zine Unsound, which Brad also used to write for and which I've included below to both clue you into the spirit of the enterprise and to cement the legend.

"I am going to attempt to explain a few things about Stahlbau through an interview and my personal experiences with the "leader" of the band, Matthias Faller (in as far as that he can be called the leader of the band). I first met Matthias when I was 14 at a boarding school in Ottersberg near Bremen, Germany. Over the three years that I knew him he always seemed very distant from everything, a trait which most people who met him perceived as arrogance, which to a small extent, it may have been. There was one thing about him I always found amusing, even though odd, and this was his basic hatred of music. He would leave the room if you put on something he didn't like and that wouuld include everything except for the approximate 10 records he owned (all the Amon Duul albums, A few Can, Faust and Edgar Varese). These records were the only music that he would listen to. What does all that have to do with Stahlbau? Most people that I know that have heard the band are annoyed and/or intrigued by their sounds and attitude, and I believe that this can be directly traced back to Matthias' teenage years, although the group steadfastly denies there being a leader, it must be obvious that it is Matthias that dictates that sound as the influences are the exact same as the groups mentioned earlier, and it is true that he surrounds himself with those who are like minded, so as not to have to deal with what he calls "irrelevant influences". When I moved back to America in 1976, I lost contact with Matthias, and was therefore very surprised to receive a long letter and cassette in the mail in 1982, which contained most of what became their first release on Another Room's cassette label. Personally I find their material far more powerful than any other recent German band; their music is as if someone had found a way to successfully record emotions, and while most people hearing the cassette will (to an extent) assume that this emotion is pure anger and hatred, this is mostly true, but it seems to me that the main idea that the band is trying to put across is a deadly fear of what they honestly feel is our inescapable future (the story behind their cassettes is not some pretentious fable that they have recently devised to seem hip and dangeerous, but something that Matthias really believed would happen back when I first met him). There is a basic storyline behind their cassette which I will try to outline here briefly: the rich have, after war/holocaust/etc. managed to take over the world and, due to the vast financial resources that they had, were able to survive this completely unharmed. Everybody else (the few left) are too weak to make any kind of attempt to prevent this takeover. They are essentially slaves to the rich, and the rich, in order to ensure total submission, will immediately (actually have killed) anybody who disobeys, steps out of line, or does not fill their work quota (this is actually quite logical, as if the person charged is not given any chance to defend himself, cannot spread dissent, and hence, the people are governed by fear in a completely fascist state). The series of cassettes that the band hopes to put out will chronicle the events taking place there. Oh yeah, the story does not have a happy ending for the workers. The band tries to avoid all contact with their fans, not out of arrogance but because they feel that there is absolutely nothing that they could offer them outside of their music, and that any meeting between the group and a fan would be disillusioning to the fan, as the group is withdrawn around others to an almost absurd extent.

The group's next cassette will be out on Aeon by the time you read this.

The following is a short interview with Matthias conducted by Michael Fey, in August 1983.

Us: How long until the tape series is finished?

Matthias: Three, maybe four years. You see, we only record as we are asked to. When somebody desires to release our music we take up where we left off on the last tape and continue. This is good in that there exists absolutely no outtakes of ours that may be released at some other time. This affords us all the control over the music as we could hope for.

Us: As a German band it is a bit unusual for you to have no German label; to only be dealing (so far) with American labels. You are all but unknown in Germany, right?

Matthias: This is true, but then we have never geared our music for any specific market. Most of the people over here who heard our first music hated it, and this made us all the more determined to get it released. While it would have been nice to have had the cassettes put out on a German record label, the attempts to have this done were frustrating and degrading. You know, by having sent the cassette to Americans has shown how easy it was to generate interest. Too us it only matters that the music is released and our message heard. Germany had it's chance, and they lost it. Nobody here cares about the band, why should we care about them? Besides, as I said, we make the music as it is desired from the label. Most German labels would want a finished product and are not at all willing to wait six months to a year while we finish it for them. We feel that we have had much luck with getting music to people and have little to complain about. Besides, I think it to be quite novel being a German band without a German label, do you not?

Us: Will you tour?

Matthias: We will not be treated like animals while touring. If our conditions are met we will tour. So far promoters have found our proposals unacceptable, Until they are met, we won't tour. Live shows are uncomfortable to do for us, and if we do them, then we must have a very good reason to do them. Our conditions are these reasons.

Us: Why do you avoid contact with your fans?

Matthias: There is nothing we can say to them that would be of interest to them. Most who meet us are disappointed and think of us as cold, arrogant people. We are not, we just find it extraordinarily difficult to communicate with those whom we have never met and find being put in that position very uncomfortable. Look at it this way: If you are a fan of somebody's you probably have a very high opinion of them. But what if when you meet them and they are very worn out, or are not what you expected? Then you dislike that person as they have disappointed you, right? By avoiding contact with our fans, we also avoid disappointing them, which in the long run is better for both us and the fans, do you not think so? Our music says all we could say to them as strangers. Our music is our communique to our fans."

AN INTERLUDE OF WHACKED OUT SINGLES FROM THE BRAD LANER ARCHIVE

The selection of singles that follow come courtesy of blog friend and Steaming Coils/Medicine/Electric Company mastermind Brad Laner, though the commentary is my own (Eric's). As most all of these are as new to me as they are to you, my comments on 'em represent provisional first passes. Tons of great shit here...Dig!

BRENT WILCOX-LEISURE WITH DIGNITY, 1981, USA
You can pretty much thank Wilcox for my share of the content of this blog, as his 80's L.A. radio show FRGK (Funny Rock, God Knows...) was singularly responsible for shaping my sensibility back in my early teens. Turns out that his one-off single ain't too shabby either. The way half melodic improv ramble collides with spluttery, spastic yet spare rock fragmentation here calls to mind entirely French points of reference for me, from the art brut whimsy of DDAA, to 70's underground mutants like Barricade, Heratius & Mahogany Brain.

EAZY TEETH-CAR NOISE/HER BLADE. 1980, USA
Half cartoonish electronic boink 'n' doink between Der Plan, Akira Sakata and Morgan Fisher, half gritty lo-fi post punk instrumental churn of a vaguely Dark Day-ish disposition. All entirely winning.

GOG-THE BEATLESS E.P., SWEDEN, 1979
Mysterious and fried in the extreme, L.A. Free Music Society seems as likely a touchstone as any for the combination of Geiger counter click and splutter, lobotomized guitar and sax duals of walkman recording fidelity, transistor radio opera broadcasts and mouth-full-of-porridge mumbling found here. The Bananafish crowd oughta flip their wigs over this...

HOLGER HILLER-S/T E.P., 1980, GERMANY
Pretty far from the refined Residential vision displayed on his classic LP "Ein Bundel Faulnis In Der Grube", this debut single by Palais Schaumburg's Hiller is every bit as smurfily screwy as you'd anticipate, but it's also very spare and minimal in approach. Bedroom retardation full of naif charm.

JOHN DUNCAN-CREED, 1981, USA
For those expecting the shortwave austerity of his more well known experimental electronic work, this collection of obsessive vignettes should comes as a bit of a surprise. Recordings from this era of Duncan's work ran hand in hand with his notoriously twisted performance actions of the era. Housed in a sleeve spattered with real blood, this first single of his (following his Organic LP) finds festering pools of tape/vinyl mulch coexisting with poetic recitations, pots and pans percussion, backward tapes and extended phone calls to to Dr. Tony Grant's psychological help line. Curious stuff....

KI DI ME-MOTHER IS/ISLAMATIC, 1981, USA
Murky and bare bones, this minimal synth curiousity has a hard to finger appeal. A side is a bit Algebra Suicide-like, albeit graced with somewhat awkward vocalizing, B side sounds like pre-Human League material by The Future heard through ears full of maple syrup.

PLEBS-A COLLECTION OF QUESTION MARKS E.P., 1982, USA
Weedy and fidgety jazz punk scribble-scrabble maneuvers over plinking rhythm boxes issued on The Minutemen's New Alliance label, which sorta makes sense.

SLIVERS-RESTRAINT FOR STYLE, 1981, USA
Another punk jazz curio, this one with Will Shatter-like vocal spew dukeing it out with sax squall, rickity farfisa, and a relentless fixation on a particular scrabbly little above-the-bridge guitar noise. Nice.

THE LAUGHING SOUP DISH-TEENAGE LIMA BEAN/RAINY DAY SPONGE, 1985, USA
Primitive acid psych with a beautifully corrosive guitar tone and enough structural wobbliness and latent acid weirdity to vestigially tie this in with The Dukes Of Stratosphear and their fallout, ala Aussie psych poppers Tyrnaround. A real discovery and a helluva lot more fried than anything I woulda anticipated from the Voxx Records camp.

WILD KINGDOM-ROMA-DESTINY, FLEXI, 1981, USA
Wow! What the hell is this? Wildly elaborate and head-spinning art pop genius. Exceptionally unique, I can hear traces of Song Of The Bailing Man-era Pere Ubu, Fibonaccis and Human Hands here. You could knock me over with a feather after hearing this one! Anyone know if these cats recorded anything else?

TO NIJE SALA/WHAT MAKES DONNA TWIRL?-A BITER KERMIT HAEVEN/SELF TITLED, SPLIT LP, 1989, USA

Following my barrage of Steaming Coils posts, here's a little known and critical piece of the Brad Laner puzzle (well, half of this anyway). To Nije Sala's side finds a post-Steaming Coils Laner paired up with Steve Stain and Lucija Kordic of What Makes Donna Twirl?, and it's a combination electrically charged with the sick synergy of flipped sensibilities colliding for the first time. With Stain's strained vox at the fore (his exhibitionistic approach standing in stark contrast to Chrisman's low key warble in Steaming Coils), The mixed company Laner's keeping here prompts him to re-approach the overt insanity of the first era of Steaming Coils and it's a gorgeously demented thing to behold. What Makes Donna Twirl?'s side is equally touched in the head sounding, if slightly less in-your-face with it's psychosis mongering. The vibe here is distinctly claustrophobic, percussively churning, grunting and howling in a personal hermetic abyss uniquely their own.
