VAS DEFERENS ORGANIZATION LAUNCH THEIR NEW LABEL PUER GRAVY WITH THEIR 100 COPY LP "EYE PEELS AND BRAIN PICKS": PRE-ORDER NOW!

A gilded lily pad for luxuriating polymorphs and a slapstick rug pull of a swami's magic carpet, Eye Peels & Brain Picks, the latest all points bulletin and consensus reality disruption from Vas Deferens Organization will be issued on October 17th, 2011 in a finite edition of only 100 numbered vinyl copies as the first salvo in the transformation of our record label into its new identity as Puer Gravy.

the LP's are priced at $25 a piece and pre-orders are currently being taken NOW at the new Puer Gravy site. Those who obtain a copy will soon hold in their mitts a lovingly appointed (gold printed, laminated plastic panel-bedecked, laser etched and 180 gram) artifact containing all manifestations of these further mysteries, though the merely curious can suffice with having the full A side of this album made available to them in .wav format on the day of its formal release.

'Til then, we invite you to open your collective earholes to our advance preview track (also in .wav format), "78 Revolving Potentiometers", which can be found here

In addition to further new Vas Deferens Organization titles emerging on Puer Gravy in the coming months (including a long-in-the-works split collaborative LP with the French band Audace and with the Italian nutter Ben Presto of Larsen Lombriki), there will also be 100 copy LP's released by Dominique Leone (ex-Pitchfork scribe with releases on Stromland and Important Records) and Philip Sanderson (Storm Bugs/Snatch Tapes)

There will also be two other new Vas Deferens Organization LP's in extremely limited quantities emerging before the end of the year, via two different German labels:

In mid-November, Pure Pop For Now People will release the first of two archival Vas Deferens Organization LP's from our original and extended late 90's formation in editions of 200 copies, the first being a 1997 collaboration between VDO and a now-defunct cosmic synth duo called Perihelion that featured David Price, ex-of The Red Tapes whose 1980 tape is posted elsewhere on MS and the Audion/Eurock promoted cosmic synthesist Tim Boone [R.I.P.]. This is titled The Science Of The Impossible and will be out in late November, with a second archival VDO LP to be issued on PPFNP early the following year.

And in late December, Hlava will issue a six track Vas Deferens Organization EP from 2004 titled "Keep Shoving Those Double-Thick Slices Of Electric Salad Down My Throat" in a 12" vinyl edition of only 150 copies.

VAS DEFERENS ORGANIZATION AND PUER GRAVY UPDATE FOR MARCH: MICHAEL ALAN ALIEN, PHILIP SANDERSON + VAS DEFERENS ORGANIZATION LIVE FOOTAGE

The three of us in Vas Deferens Organization are perfectly delighted to be able to present to you the first evidence of our brand new collaboration with New York visual/installation/performance art dynamo Michael Alan that will shortly be resulting in a full length LP for our Puer Gravy imprint (release details soon forthcoming). Have a gander at the eye popping and genre/category-obliterating antics that Michael gets up to via the video below to fully appreciate the deliriousness of his explorations, which in addition to his paintings, collages and 6-8 hour immersive live environments have now shifted tack to include musical collaborations. Thus far, there have been single track collaborations between Michael and everyone from Renaldo of Renaldo And The Loaf and Geneva Jacuzzi to Jello Biafra and Kingdom Scum and from Japanther to Jeff and Jane Hudson, but now is your first opportunity to let Michael Alan Alien & Vas Deferens Organization infect your earholes with the combination of their perverse streaks. The brainworm du jour? A little ditty called Shoe String Theory, which you can download in full .wav sound quality
here
Further info regarding this collaboration will soon also be found in an upcoming profile of Michael that's shortly to run in Crudo Magazine here

And feast your eyes on the delirious bacchanal that constitutes Michael's creative universe here:

More info about Michael and his work can be found by visiting his site here

In further news, we're all equally delighted to finally be able to formally announce Puer Gravy release number two:

PHILIP SANDERSON-HOLLOW GRAVITY LP (PG 002)-EDITION OF 100

This exceptional album, Sanderson's first of new original material in five years (following his stellar Seal Pool Sounds) will be issued in a screen printed and laser etched edition of one hundred 180 gram LP copies. Many here will know Sanderson best from his work in the stunning Storm Bugs as well as for his having run the vaunted Snatch Tapes label back in the early 80's, but what's often missed is that he's still producing haunting and enigmatic work that's at the very top of his game, something that the
advance track below handily demonstrates. Hollow Gravity will be out at the beginning of May, with further release details forthcoming shortly, but in the meantime, wrap your minds around his tune Low Flying Branches here to see what all the fuss is about....

To tie things up with a big red bow, you can now feast your eyes on the one and only live performance that Vas Deferens Organization ever undertook during the time that I've been a member of the band, on the occasion of us opening for the revamped Chrome circa Spring of 1998. This footage features the extended line-up of (at the time) VDO principal members Matt Castille, Eric Lumbleau and Doug Ferguson (also of Yeti/Ohm...RIP), alongside part time VDO members David Fargason (Liquid Sound Company) Jim Edgerton (Burnin Rain/Fish Eye Lens), Scott Lindsay (Cult Ceavers), Jay Jernigan (Shits And Giggles) and Reagen Boone.
Please note that we blew the fuse at the venue at 3:30 and the music doesn't resume 'til 10:00...

Production, Engineering and Sound Design By Vas Deferens Organization
Recorded at Klearlight Studios, Dallas, Texas, February 2010
Mastered by Udi Koomran, Tel Aviv

Featuring the first new recordings by Ariel Pink since Haunted Graffiti's Before Today sessions, this self titled five track 12" EP launches the debut of his newest unit, Ariel Pink With Added Pizzazz. Issued by Free Dope And Fucking In The Streets and with a release date of July 9th, this limited edition EP will only be available in it's current form on Haunted Graffiti's upcoming American tour.

As I mentioned in my last announcement about Vas Deferens Organization's work together with Ariel, "Hot Body Rub" the VDO-produced and Added Pizzazz-enabled sleaze funk opening gambit from Before Today (available for the first time in its unedited form here) was merely a tease of things to come, and Ariel Pink With Added Pizzazz represents its lurid fruition.

Recorded during February of this year at Dallas' Klearlight Studios, Ariel is accompanied on this EP by Jim Lehnert on sax and trombone, Aaron Gonzalez on electric and upright bass, Stefan Gonzalez on drums and vibes and legendary free jazzer Dennis Gonzalez on trumpet and midwifed by the production team in Vas Deferens Organization of which I'm a member and which those that have been around Mutant Sounds for a while will know about from the many VDO albums and productions that I've shared over time, including collaborations with Brad Laner and Mercury Rev members and our productions for Denton/Dallas scene legends like Ohm and J. Bone Cro.

Opening doors onto multiple facets of Ariel's muse you were never privy to before, the first track from the EP "In The Heat Of The Night", can be listened to Here

PRE-RELEASE ANNOUNCEMENT FOR VAS DEFERENS ORGANIZATION & BRAD LANER-TRANSCONTINENTAL CONSPIRACY-FULLY REMASTERED CD REISSUE WITH BONUS TRACK

In conjunction with the new Polish label Niklas, I'm pleased to finally announce the imminent CD re-release of the first of Vas Deferens Organization's two collaborations with Medicine/Steaming Coils/Electric Company mastermind Brad Laner. Transcontinental Conspiracy not only marked our first collaboration with Laner, but it also contains contributions from three members of the legendary Mercury Rev (Grasshopper, Suzanne Thorpe and Jason Russo). This 15 year anniversary edition has been dramatically remastered by Vas Deferens Organization and comes equipped with both an exclusive and brand new 10 minute VDO & Laner track from 2010 called Scheming Foils and with brand new packaging design courtesy of the fine folks at Niklas, who've made this all possible.

They've described this album thusly on their site: "An absolutely must-have avant-rock classic of the 90s., one of the best albums of its kind, where advanced studio sonic experimentation meets refined influences of Faust and Can, funk, electronics, breakbeats and Dadaist humour – and results in long, crazy, multi-layered suites – a quintesence of what we are now accustomed to call post-rock…"

You can download one minute long samples in full .wav audio of three of these tracks here, to give you a better sense of its remastered sound quality and to absorb what lies in wait with the bonus track.

The official release date for this CD is July 31st, 2011. It will be available at that date to order worldwide from Polish distributors Serpent. A list of further distributors will be made available on the Mutant Sounds announcement on the day of it's official release. Wholesale and distributor inquiries should be directed to Monotype Records.

A full press release for this album can be downloaded via the above Niklas link.

MUTANT SOUNDS GETS PROFILED IN BOING BOING AND VAS DEFERENS ORGANIZATION REVEAL THEIR HIDDEN HIP HOP HISTORY

Watch out! Whole swaths of aboveground straight society have just been hepped to our doings via Boing Boing's omnidirectional reach, as the kind folks at that site unexpectedly profiled Mutant Sounds a short time ago. You can read that here

This also seemed like it might be an amusing moment to reveal the real reason for Vas Deferens Organization's disappearance off of our fans radar screens for a span of time during the last decade. It was because we'd effectively gone undercover. Some time in early 2005, I got an insane phone call from my bandmate Matt who was living in New Orleans at the time, in which he told me that he'd effectively conned one of the top hip hop club owners there into believing that we were heavy duty rap producers and the guy was interested in seriously hooking us up if we could hand him some tracks. Once the realization hit what a monumental prank on reality this could be if we really managed to pull of this hat trick (and really, how hard could it be for innovative electronic producers to unpack the logic of making this stuff?), we set about doing just that and our contact in turn set about introducing us to a series of industry fat cats, with the end result that I moved to New Orleans to open a hip hop studio on the periphery of The French Quarter with Matt in early 2005. Before Katrina struck, we had handlers and reps for Juvenile coming around and scoping us out and affiliations made with A&R men from B.G.'s Chopper City Records and after Katrina wiped us out and sent us fleeing New Orleans, we ended up following the A&R rep for Chopper City all the way to Atlanta and effectively becoming his right hand for a year until a series of insane and unforeseen circumstances exploded this dream right as it was about to take flight. You can still find a stray remnant of this era lurking on this random and generic hip hop compilation CD here

The best way to understand our specifically subversive intentions in trying to make an intervention into the hip hop world is to note the alias that we'd rechristened ourselves as: The Water Brothers. Legendary pop sci-fi author Robert Heinlein had used aliens going by this name in order to secretly spread Aleister Crowley's Thelemic teachings to the masses in his celebrated book Stranger In A Strange Land and we in turn would use the Trojan Horse of hip hop in order to seed the VDO audio virus as far and as wide as we could before anyone put 2 and 2 together and realized exactly what kind of avant garde acidhead subversives that they'd unexpectedly and unintentionally released into pop culture.

Since the Italian magazine Blow Up unveiled this hidden part of our history in the biggest possible way by headlining the article that they ran about VDO a few issues back with this info (a .pdf scan of the article with some personal annotations via the Italian friend of ours that initially scanned this for us can be had here ) we're now making available four 30 second samples of our work as Dirty South gangsta rap producers during this time (we'd offer whole tracks, but we're contractually bound from doing that), though it seems worth putting these out there now just to see how much amusement, confusion and shattered illusions we can generate with one gesture! You can check out what VDO hip hop sounds like here

And since we have, for no good reason, shared our recently created video for the first track from Vas Deferens Organization's Eye Peels & Brain Picks ("Defenestration At The Gravity Pit") everywhere else but here, it seemed time to plant this here as well for the edification of those who didn't happen across it via Altered Zones, Youtube or elsewhere

Vas Deferens Organization & Brad Laner-Transcontinental Conspiracy/Electric Company& Vas Deferens Organization-More Pelvis Wick For The Baloney Boners

Well...'til now I've held fast to the notion that I wouldn't be using Mutant Sounds as a self-promotional tool, but as there's been a tremendous amount of interest in my postings of the work of Brad Laner (Steaming Coils, Savage Republic, Medicine, Electric Company), I thought it only fair to share the two albums that my band Vas Deferens Organization recorded with him. As a lifelong devotee of Steaming Coils, having the chance to collaborate with Brad was a dream come true for my bandmate Matt and myself and one of the creative highlights of my life so far, especially so in the case of "More Pelvis Wick...", which unlike it's predecessor was recorded together in the same room. I'll refrain from reviewing my own work here, which I think would be a mite tacky. Instead, I'll merely state that I presume that all visitors to Mutant Sounds have a good idea of my sensibility by now (as well as Brad's via the umpteen posts of his work here) and it's a sensibility that extends through to my musical work as well. So too, any Mercury Rev fans out there might be interested to know that both Grasshopper and Suzanne Thorpe appear on Transcontinental Conspiracy. Hope you all enjoy 'em...

NOTE: BLOGGER'S LIMITATIONS ON HOW MANY LETTERS CAN BE USED FOR A TITLE HEADING MEANT LEAVING OFF THE DATES FOR THESE ABOVE. TRANSCONTINENTAL IS FROM 1996, MORE PELVIS WICK FROM 1999.

ADDITIONAL NOTE: TRANSCONTINENTAL CONSPIRACY IS SOON DUE FOR REISSUE (DETAILS FORTHCOMING IN A BLOG POST DUE SOON), SO THE LINKS FOR THIS HAVE BEEN REMOVED.

VAS DEFERENS ORGANIZATION-NINTH WARD FOURTH WORLD LP - AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER AND FREE PARTIAL DOWNLOAD NOW!

Yes, the wait is finally over folks. The first new album by Vas Deferens Organization (Eric Lumbleau, Matt Castille, Christopher Moock) under our own banner in nine years (coming on the heels of all our recent work with Ariel Pink as Shits And Giggles and Ariel Pink with Added Pizzazz) is now finally upon us. The first title out of the gate in our new 33 1/3 degree series on our Free Dope And Fucking In The Streets imprint, Ninth Ward Fourth World represents the distillation of the VDO aesthetic to a 151 proof fine science; a collapsing of the sinister, the absurd and the sublime into a reality-annihilating gravitational nexus. We've spared no expense in the creation of this remarkable and extremely limited audio artifact, with both the front and back of the jacket sporting full sized four-color hard plastic laminated panels and with eye-popping artwork laser etched into the center of the 180 gram vinyls in place of labels. This LP and all future releases in this series are limited to only 100 physical copies.

With a official release date of Nov. 13, this LP is offered on a strictly first come, first served basis and is limited to 3 copies per customer. Pre-orders are now being accepted Here

and look out for further new albums on Free Dope And Fucking In The Streets by Vas Deferens Organzation and it's satellites as well as the highly anticipated third album from avant pop auteur/one man band/ex-pitchfork scribe Dominique Leone.

MATT CASTILLE & BARRICK WITTMANN-MUTTER IDJOT 2008/CONSULT THE CREATURE OF FLATWOODS, 2 TRACK WEB-EXCLUSIVE E.P., 2009, USA/GERMANY

Though our intention had originally been to withhold the release of new material by both Vas Deferens Organization (the band that I'm in) or it's satellite projects until after the impending release of the debut album by our new band together with Ariel Pink (Shits And Giggles, formal release details of which will be spelled out in the near future), suddenly, the idea of unleashing this particular piece of the puzzle into the bitstream unannounced and apropos of nothing seemed oddly irresistible. At hand is a two track web-only exclusive E.P. comprising material by Vas Deferens Organization's Matt Castille, working in conjunction with his eleven year old German nephew (yes, you read that correctly), who became inspired to collaborate with Matt under the direct influence of Felix Kubin's early teenage misadventures in Neue Deutsche Welle tape culture that was retroactively documented on his Tetchy Teenage Tapes CD and the Die Egozentrischen 2 LP, inclinations toward acts of artistic oddity evidently being a trans-generational impulse within the Castille clan.

YETI-THE MAN WITH THE LAMP, ONE-SIDED LP, 2006 (RECORDED: 2000), USA

It's with great pleasure and some reverence that I'm finally bringing to you this extraordinary recording. With both keyboardist Doug Ferguson and bassist Tommy Atkins now having departed this earth (a sadly all too common occurrence in our musical circles), founding Yeti member and current half of Pinkish Black Jon Teague has agreed to let me share this remarkable recording with you.

Formed on the heels of Doug's departure from the temporarily dis-banded Vas Deferens Organization circa 1998, Yeti was the ultimate vehicle for realizing Doug's grandiose avant prog visions. While Ohm had served as his conduit for his cosmic improvisations and Vas Deferens Organization a means for him to express his most outlandish visions, it was with Yeti that Doug truly came into his own as a composer. To the accompaniment of a bulldozing rhythm section  rendered acres wide with fuzz and distortion and the surprisingly shaded interventions of guitarist Eric Harris, Doug would let rip with barrages of minor key organ and string synth menace laced with synthetic hailstorms from his Wakeman-worthy banks of keys. All of this was the result of Doug having internalized the deepest dimensions of avant prog in general and Zeuhl in particular; specifically that most anguished dimension of it articulated by the Magma of De Futura and even more specifically Shub Niggurath, who'd take this genre it to its most harrowing and soured extremes. With the assist of his Fort Worth pals, who'd been steeping in this stuff with him, though approaching it from a background more based in in hardcore, Yeti's dystopian vision was brought to life.

They would emerge fully formed with their debut outing "Things To Come" and after Doug's tragic death in 2002, Jon, Eric and Tommy would carry on as a power trio on 2004's "Volume, Obliteration, Transcendance", but the Doug era was considered to be a closed book until the emergence of this 18 minute epic, issued on a one-sided LP in 2006. The source recording for The Man With The Lamp was offered to my bandmate Matt Castille from Vas Deferens Organization by Doug to see if the rehearsal room recording from which it stems could in any way be salvaged by Matt's magic.  The Man With The Lamp was a career high for them as a composition but it was also, having only been recorded as a private rehearsal jam, a pretty rough and murky document and required a substantial sonic overhaul from Matt to bring it up to releasable level, if not perfect clarity. What results is one of their most monolithic and crushing recordings, leavened with some of their most delicate shadings and ensconced in a VDO production patina.

This recording also exposes a hidden dimension of VDO's productions, in that this was but one of three dark avant prog recordings from the era that we produced. Expect to discover more from this universe once our productions for PrimitivEcho and Coprolingus eventually see the light of day.

ARIEL PINK EXCLUSIVE!!! NEW TRACKS WITH MICHAEL ALAN PLUS ARIEL'S ALBUMS WITH VAS DEFERENS ORGANIZATION IN WAV AUDIO!

Tying everything up with a incestuous Pink bow, our previous collaborator Ariel Pink has now seen fit to lock loins with our current collaborator, New York art world wunkerkind Michael Alan for two (count 'em two) tracks of brand new material for your perusal. With all the wall to wall hubbub being generated by the new Haunted Graffiti album, you'd think that 10+ minutes of even newer Ariel Pink music floating around on Soundclouds would elicit some meaningful attention, but this has somehow slipped under virtually everyone's wire 'til now. Serendipitously enough, our promotion of this collaboration perfectly coincides with our own long planned giveaway in full .wav audio quality of both of the albums that my band Vas Deferens Organization made with Ariel just prior to his 4AD world domination campaign, specifically the Ariel Pink With Added Pizzazz-s/t 12" EP and the Shits And Giggles-Trick Or Treat LP, both released on our label Free Dope And Fucking In The Streets (now Puer Gravy). The Added Pizzazz EP notably includes the glorious full length version of the track "Hot Body Rub", i.e. The Added Pizzazz track that Ariel cleverly appropriated (and drastically edited) for use on Before Today and which precedes the arrival of the actual band Haunted Graffiti by several minutes.

MUTANT UPDATE AND MICHAEL ALAN & VDO RELATED NEWS

So hello to you all and thanks for your patience. I'm just back from working on the next two Vas Deferens Organization projects in California, which is why there's been a lapse here on Mutant, but new posts should hopefully appear within a week or so now that I can devote myself again to Mutant related activities.

Until then and if you're in New York next week, please don't miss the chance to take in VDO collaborator Michael Alan's performance at the Brooklyn's New Museum's Untapped street festival. This takes place in Manhattan on May 4th from noon to 4 PM at Sara D. Roosevelt Park, a bacchanal that'll include music from our collaboration with him. This album (Michael Alan Alien & Vas Deferens Organization-All You Can Eat) is now set for release as an LP later in the year via Beta-Lactam Ring Records  (specifics forthcoming later). In the meantime, you can check out one final brief advance track to whet your appetite Here  The three earlier advance tracks we posted can be found on the links list on the bar to your right.

Also scheduled for release later in the year on Beta-Lactam Ring Records will be the three way collaboration between Vas Deferens Organization, Sound and French Art Brut RIO mutants La Societe Des Timides A La Parade Des Oiseaux, whose cassette EP you can download below.

Vas Deferens Organization's Eye Peels And Brain Picks LP has now officially sold out on pre-order, though it will shortly be available from a handful of international distributors (listed below). They will now ship on Monday, Oct. 24th, instead of having gone out on their announced release date of Oct. 17th. We truly are sorry about this fuck up, but hope all of you find the results worth the wait when you finally receive them.

In the meantime (and for the benefit of those of you who didn't get a copy), the entire A side of Eye Peels And Brain Picks can be downloaded in .wav format Here

Because these corrected jackets ship out to distributors on the same day as regular buyers now, there will be a slight delay before these reach distributors and become available again. They will be available from the following:

PHILIP SANDERSON & VAS DEFERENS ORGANIZATION-"UPSTAIRS BACKWARDS", ADVANCE TRACK

One of the first fruits from the new and as-yet-untitled collaboration between Storm Bugs/Snatch Tapes mastermind Philip Sanderson and Vas Deferens Organization, the band in which I work, "Upstairs Backwards", subtitled "Drums in the Sanctuary (Abandoning The Office - She Descends Into The Underworld)" is VDO assisted by "The Lundon Physician" as he lovingly vivisects our work and teases the results into a series of wide-angle tracking shots.

note: In order to get my initial posts up by the end of the week as promised, I've decided to hoist these first three files on my own dropbox account and then migrate them over to the FMA later, once the i's are dotted and the t's crossed in setting everything up with them.

OHM-02, LP, 1997, USA

Despite my participation in it's production (alongside my bandmate in Vas Deferens Organization, Matt Castille), I have no reservations whatsoever about stating that this debut LP by this Fort Worth, TX quartet is one of the finest kosmiche recordings ever released by a contemporary band; alas, one whose exploits were tragically cut short by the deaths of both keyboard maestro Doug Ferguson (who would go on to join Vas Deferens Organization in the wake of this recording) and clarinetist Chris Forrest in the early 2000's. Right now some of you are probably thinking "A clarinet....in a space rock group?" to which I'd suggest an immersion in the eponymous third Lard Free LP which both prominently featured said instrument in it's mind melting matrix and which, alongside Brainticket and The Cosmic Jokers, served as one of Ohm's principal points of departure. A reality dissolving masterpiece, start to finish.
