BABA YAGA "Collage" LP 1974 (Germany)

First of all I would like to thank both my friends Jim and Eric for inviting me to contribute to this wonderful blog. For my first post, I will dedicate to them and to all of you an extreme kraut rock obscurity from 1974, BABA YAGA's second album "Collage" on the Phonola label.

BABA YAGA were not a proper group but a duo collaboration of MY SOLID GROUND's keyboard wizard Ingo Werner and iranian multi instrumentalist Nemat Darman. Both their albums had been issued in 1974 but it is their second one "Collage" which is the real brain melting obscurity. A hybrid of heavy electronic krautrock with ethnic spiced POPOL VUH exoticism and abstract THIRD EAR BAND cum early BETWEEN esoteric weirdisms, this is the best example of blissful far out krautrock grandeur.

PS. The album had been recorded during the cheap late night recording sessions at Dieter Dierks studio and engineered by a certain Tobby Robinson; the same man involved with the obscure Pyramid albums that surfaced during the mid 90ies through the british ACME label (though I strongly doubt their original existence).
Get it here.

  7. I thought we already did a vote on which download service to use? You do realize that your uploads only fail if the file has been removed and blocked (because it is illegal) by other free hosts when using massmirror.

  10. quazi-regarding the reasons uploads fail, that's untrue in my experience. I've had this same issue with massmirror when uploading posts to their system. Sometimes their system craps out and a file only uploads to one or two hosts. You try again later and it works fine. Methinks massmirror's system still can't quite keep up with their escalating popularity and these sorta things periodically happen.

  11. vdoandsound I have not had a single problem with the service to tell you the truth. Depositfiles was not working on it for a day but that is only because depositfiles upgraded their software (i guess). There is a blog post about it at blog.massmirror.com .

Honestly, for me here in America, massmirror is by far the best service. I just love the options it gives you.

  13. As far as I know there was only one album by Baba Yaga, and that is this classic. Unless someone can provide details of the 'other' album I'll continue to believe there isn't one ;-)
Re: those Pyramid albums, I once got in touch via e-mail with Reinhard Karwatky [from Dzyan], who was credited as playing synths on the Galactic Explorers album, and he confirmed that he did actually play on it. I didn't think to ask if that means he played on it in the 70's, or the 90's, but I presume it was the 70's. But, yeah, some of those albums have made me wonder if they were actually made more recently... It'd be great if someone could dig out the definitive story on those releases, do a bit of detective work...

  14. BABA YAGA's debut album (black/red cover with a photo of the band), is more song based and influenced by UK progressive bands like STILL LIFE or FANTASY. On that one BABA YAGA were a six piece band; Ingo Werner is the only member on both albums and Bernd Weidmann is the vocalist on the first one.

Track list (from my audio tape)
    Rebekka
    Turdus Merula
    Intoxication
    Homage A
    Powerful Hand
    La Tombeau

Concerning the Pyramid releases, how does it come that even the biggest kraut rock dealers/collectors NEVER owned or have seen a copy? And I own a NAZGUL 10inch vinyl (yes the same band), which was released in 1997 and credits the musicians as of UK origin, if that can be of any help...

  15. Slightly off topic but does anyone know where I might pick up a copy of Angela - 'Fantasy' which was produced by Ingo Werner? I cannot source it anywhere. Thanks.
