Andrew Rudin - Tragoedia,LP,USA,1968

"Rudin’s reputation was established in the 1960’s through his association with Robert Moog and a pioneering series of synthesized compositions, most notably his Nonesuch album, Tragoedia. Throughout the 1970’s many of his compositions were theatrical in nature, involving collaborations with ballet and modern dance, film, television, and incidental music for the stage. His one-act opera, The Innocent was produced in Philadelphia in 1972 by Tito Capobianco. A number of these works blended electronically synthesized sound with traditional instruments and voices. Particularly of note among these works is the inclusion of his music in the soundtrack of the film Fellini: Satyricon. Among the dance groups and choreographers with whom he has worked are Dance Theatre Workshop, Jeff Duncan, Murray Louis, The Pennsylvania Ballet, London Contemporary Dance Theatre, Louis Falco, and four collaborations with Alwin Nikolais. The 1980’s saw the completion of his full-evening opera Three Sisters, on a libretto by William Ashbrook from the play by Chekhov, as well as many works for traditional instruments, both orchestral and chamber music. After his graduation from The University of Pennsylvania, where he studied primarily with George Rochberg, he joined the faculty of The Philadelphia Musical Academy, remaining there for the next thirty-seven years, as it eventually became part of the present University of the Arts. During this time he taught music history, theory, and composition, directed the new music ensemble, and headed the electronic music studio. He taught in the graduate division of the Juilliard School from 1981-1984. Since his retirement in 200l he has worked as a broadcaster for WWFM, The Classical Network from Mercer County Community College, and served on the board of directors for Philadelphia’s Orchestra 2001. He continues to compose extensively. His professional affiliation is BMI. He lives in Allentown, NJ with his partner, Tom Queenan."

Great and much obscure moog based electroacoustic LP by one of the masters of the genre. Strange electronic compositions with a sometimes scary atmosphere!

ECLIPSE-S/T, LP, 1976, CANADA

A swoon inducing and sadly forgottten space rock masterpiece by these Canadian masters of the game that effortlessly shifts from sweeping and truly blasted sounding Floydian grandiosity to Benoit Widemann-like synthy zeuhl prog-funk only to yield to extended passages of ghostly lysergic atmospherics lacquered in female choral gliss and then spin on a dime and mindfuck you with maddeningly infectious Abba-by-way-of-Massiera anthemic pop prog screwiness. Monster caliber.

I.E.-ART FOR WAR'S SAKE, LP, 1987, USA

I.E.'s queasy keyboard universe unfurls itself with a side-long slurry of syrupy synthetic weirdity, "Out Of The Water" being comprised of thick tides of bloop and wooze bedecked with haunted house themes that wheel about in wobbly orbits. It's a thing of sick beauty but the brain burning B side is where the real action is, with cyclically warping and faux spooky amniotic electronic rock grooves that churn and devolve in a brilliantly queasy psychedelic stasis somewhere between Steve Thomsen's bleary cartoon lope and the melted sounding French 70's electronic acid prog of Spacecraft.

NEUE KRANKENSCHEINE-S/T, TAPE E.P., 1983, GERMANY

Simultaneously gristly and smurfy, Neue Krankenscheine's candy coated lo-fi synthpunk blare is a can't-miss combination of strafed Martin Rev pulse and impish Der Plan-like dada synthiness. A high water mark of Neue Deutsche Welle tape culture.

DIE GARANTIEN DER HARMONIE UND FREIHEIT-S/T, TAPE, 1982, DENMARK

Brilliantly cryptic and acid damaged rock experimentation from this Danish mystery unit, who speak in that rarified tongue of claustrophobic post punk dream logic practiced by out rock heavyweights like Dome, Laughing Hands, Metabolist and Swell Maps.

KEIJO VIRTANEN & TIITUS PETAJANIEMI-KATUVALO SAMMUU KOHDALLANI, CDR, 2005, FINLAND

Following my posts of his stunning solo work (usually recording simply as Keijo) and his similarly entrancing moves in Vapaa, here's an overlooked classic of spectral improvised magic from this elder statesman of the Finnish underground, this time in collaboration with frequent sparring partner Petajaniemi, who works alongside Keijo in both Vapaa and The Free Players. The eldritch purgatorial zones and spare but pitch perfect Zoviet France-like grey ritual ambience these two trade in here is a fascinating side-step from the anticipated forest folk/psych improv meander many might anticipate from these two. Easily one of the finest releases in Keijo's increasingly vast discography.

E-LIVE, LP, 1990, CZECHOSLOVAKIA

Though emerging from a rather less art warped perspective than their more well known down-in-the-mouth antecedents and contemporaries from The Plastic People Of The Universe to the MCH Band, E's hectic, guitar-centric and truculently churning sturm und drang is still identifiably of the same raw boned gene pool. Repetitive passages of anxious string wrangle underpin outbursts of cathartic vocal strafe and smolder, both hitched to just enough structural undergirding to thrust these febrile phrases right up under your nose.

THE TOM & MARTY BAND-AFRAID TO GO TO SLEEP, TAPE, 1982, USA

The dark-tinged synthy (nominally minimal synthy) bleep 'n' splut-scapes that The Tom & Marty Band specialize in are cheap, grotty and strangely gripping, with the A side featuring appended monologue-ish lip flap that tugs it in the purgatorial direction of The German Shepherds and John Bender and an all-instrumental B-side that finds them grasping toward a charmingly rudimentary but curiously affecting musicality that sounds like a teenaged Martin Rev locked in your closet.

LOS MICROWAVES-LIFE AFTER BREAKFAST, LP, 1981, USA

This crafty and tack sharp San Francisco art wave unit veer from Null And Void and Christian Lunch-like damaged synthy post punk to the askew femme vox new wave peppiness of The B-52's, Family Fodder and The Waitresses, though there's enough zippy synth and rhythm box bits littered throughout to qualify this as being at least tangentially minimal synth as well.

THREE ODD LITTLE ODD-SIZED RECORDS

NICK PAINE-SOLID STATE/CALIFORNIA BEAMING, HEXAGONAL SHAPED 5", 1981, USA
Choice minimal/synth pop zaniness from the camp/quirk/cheese we-are-all-robots end of the continuum and which lands somewhere in the general neighborhood of New Occupants, Computer Sex and Futurisk. The cartoon martian march of California Beaming, with it's call-and-response vocal smurfiness is a real genre topper for me.

PERSONA NON GRATA-33.3 RPM ANALYSIS OF SOUND WITH CHEESE, 6" FLEXIDISC, 200?, USA
A big slithering Smegmatic pile of stroboscopic psychedelic entrails that sounds like it was yanked wholesale from the cartoon carcass of the L.A. Free Music Society, courtesy of this Blazen Y Sharp and Blazen, Sharp & Gerber-affiliated combo (their work to be found elsewhere on MS), with a sound not at all far from Solid Eye at their most densely deformed and taffy stretched.

PAL ASLE PETTERSEN-SPOR..., 8" POLYCARBONATE LATHE CUT, 2002, NORWAY
A small granular universe of hermetic crinkle that also takes in steely isolationist drifts, bursts of chopsticks and party favors improv, tweezing barely-there onkyo electronic flickers and looped clatter accruing spectral keyboard half-melodies. Yes, this is a good sight more nebulous than most of what floats my boat at this late date, but it's a really nicely conceptualized and assembled affair, regardless.

MOLR DRAMMAZ VS NEUROBOT-L.I.V.E.V.I.L, CDR, 2001, POLAND

Following my post of their "W Koncu!" CD and a raft of other projects by Molr Drammaz and Mik.Musik label mastermind Wojciech Kucharczyk (including Pathman and Go Underground To See More Animals), here's another brilliantly befuddling piece of the puzzle; a collaboration with fellow Polish abstract electronica merchants Neurobot. It's a fascinating and singularly uneasy universe thats being conjured here, with extended slabs of ectoplasm drenched shuddering and shearing grey-scale atmospherics through which march blowgun wielding natives to the tune of something close to Randy Greif's ergot poisoned spins on Jon Hassell's Fourth world forays, the cybernetic and ritualistic being miscegenated in increasingly sonically perverted roundelays as this lengthy release unfolds.

VARIETE-SOUVENIR, 8" E.P., 1982, JAPAN

With their endearingly doinky bontempi rhythms, archly antiquated variety show keyboard themes and demure femme vocal stratagems, Variete's wry electropop constructs exude an irresistible air of subtly skewed gentility and roguish whimsy, strategies that are definitive hallmark of Japanese musical eccentricity of this era and ones that give them an almost Slapp Happy-like frisson at times.

LUC MARIANNI-SIX SYNTHETIC SUITES, LP, 1986, FRANCE

A prime mover of 80's French underground weirdity, this one time member of Rock Critics has seen the majority of his oeuvre posted in our forum over time. Here's one of the last extant pieces of the puzzle for your edification. Documenting Marianni's interaction with a host of fellow French oddballs (several of whom also appear on the Four French Forms compilation I posted back in October of last year), among them Pataphonie's Andre Viaud and Pole label recording artist Henri Roger, these characters supply a bewitching and idiosyncratic array of musical phrases for, alternately, clarinet, piano, bass, guitar and female voice that hang like suspended hieroglyphs over Marianni's woozily modulating planes of synth motifs, as they circumnavigate their way through the recurrent elisions and ellipses that Marianni sets in motion, periodically supplanted by Julie Pareles' extended interjections of inane verbal non sequiturs.

KUDO TORI/KINUTAPAN/YUMBO-DON'T FEAR AN ADJOINING ISLAND, CD, 2003, JAPAN

The most notable name among the variable groupings of Japanese kooks at work here is Tori Kudo, whose brilliantly naif ensemble Maher Shalal Hash Baz is one of the true high water marks of contemporary Japanese underground musical thought. I might not be readily able to connect the dots on the back story of the interrelationships of the various personnel on hand here, but regardless of the identity appended to a particular track, the variable groupings here all essentially adhere to the precariously jerry rigged and discombobulated provisional constructs that Maher Shalal Hash Baz have become renowned for; one that wrings unexpected poignance from the seemingly slack and lackadaisical and profundity from a proactive naivete that owes a great deal to the plink plonk delicacy of Pascal Comelade's addled early period.
