CREEPING DAWN VOL.3 IS D.O.A.

EVIDENTLY, THE FOLKS AT STUDENTS OF DECAY MUST HAVE OBJECTED TO THEIR INSTANTLY DELETED 50 COPY COMPILATION BEING SHARED, AS ONE DAY LATER, ALL FOUR OF THE MEGAUPLOAD LINKS ARE DEAD. GO FIGURE WHAT MOTIVATES SOME PEOPLE. PERHAPS IT'S ONLY MEANT FOR THE EARS OF THE PRIVILEGED FEW? OH WELL...

*******FOLLOW UP******* Well, as it turns out, Alex Cobb from Students Of Decay had nothing at all to do with having these links pulled, as his very thoughtful and supportive comments on both this post and the board for the original post attest. My apologies to him again if the above text suggested otherwise. Evidently though, someone involved in this endeavor thought it shouldn't be shared and I've no desire to antagonize whoever it is, this material won't be reposted here, alas.

  1. Thnx for the music, but please, please maybe you can provide rapidshare links??
even mediafire or zshare will be better.
megaupload is a crap, crepp.shit and bullshit.
there atre the worst storage service.
I wish that someone will kill this megaupload...
    I simply hate them...

  2. I believe they are working with a conception of rarity = valuable. If their clients feel like they are privileged to get a copy of the release, then they are more likely to be return customers (this logic would say). If the releases are made available widely, then the value of the release is reduced since potential customers could just wait for a blog posting to get it...no reason to own the actual release.

Since they likely fund releases based on the money made from past releases, even a small reduction in their market could derail the whole project.

Of course, the better response to this would be to release the music in two streams...one limited hard-copy stream, and another digital stream for those who don't care about the cover/artwork/etc...

BUT...in this case they are probably shooting themselves in the foot (If they are the ones who had your relase pulled. ). Out-of-print works should be used as ADVERTISING for future releases. Once they are sold out, they should encourage sharing and place notices about future releases alongside the blog postings of older releases. That way they increase interest among those that might want to be part of the privileged elite who own a hard-copy.

At least that would be my advice...

  3. Don't see the point of whining like a baby over that. You know the deal with what you are doing here. If noone objects, fine! If they do, then just take it down. Be fair.

  9. Just got linked to this site, I definitely didn't lobby to have any links taken down. I have no qualms whatsoever with people sharing and enjoying out of print SOD releases.

Your statement is based on a false premise. Where is the comment on Mutant Sounds to take down the links? What actually happened was someone (could have been anyone) asked Megaupload to delete the files. That's what happened. At least be truthful about the manner in which the links died.

  12. I doubt they will be pulling a million dollars from the compilation anytime soon anyways. I don't really think anyone who would buy a copy of a c.d(or vinyl) is going to be deterred by mp3 files. This has always been my opinion. The true collectors, and those who will buy the hard copy, are going to get the real deal regardless. I don't think it affects the ebb as much as is thought.

  13. alex-great to hear directly from you. Thanks for the kind words and and my sincere apology for the automatic assumption (following the other commentators message) that you had a hand in having these files deleted. Perhaps it was one of the artists included? Whatever the case, thanks for taking the time to clarify and voice your support and sorry again for jumping to conclusions.

  15. I offer my sincere apology to Alex Cobb as well, for jumping the gun. Hopefully the links can be re-posted via Rapidshare and/or sharebee -- that way they won't get deleted so fast.

  16. What a cool string including the Mutant and Mr. SOD to exemplify what this whole thing is about. I love to buy micro releases from my favored artists (Tom Smith, are you listening?!), and would do so even if the same material gets posted here.

No sweat to me, because I still want to own the real thing and support the artist/label/involved parties regardless of where the material goes. And if posting it someplace inspires the next listener to buy something--be it a release or a ticket to a performance--that's a good thing.

  17. Given we have Alex's consent, does this mean a re-up will be in order? Really enjoyed the first 2 sets so am keen to hear this one!

  18. SOD is a great label and MS is a great site. I just wish MS could edit the original post to take the blame away from SOD ... ???

  24. Hi . Thanks for everything again. Here is a link to my silly pr'dog- rock band . we are obviously not a serious band. I played all the keys. The pictures of all the band's friends are probably more entertaining than the music. http://www.myspace.com/loschupacabras2. all the tracks are 1st take. just messin about.

  25. I've been following this blog for a long time, and appreciate so much all the great sounds you share with us. But for the sake or argument I will pose this question? What if Alex had a hand in taking down the files? Would it have then still been fair to call him out like you did? It's as if his "ok" on the thing makes everything cool now. But what if he wasn't ok with it, would the initial slam against SOD still stand? It's almost as if an artist/label might be afraid of reprisal if they don't want their art shared on your blog. I can't get behind this, as it set a very bad precedent, and makes me wonder where things are heading. I guess what I'm saying is that we can't assume to know what a label is up to, and they should always have the final say in how their art is distributed.

  26. freaknhell -In what way are you construing:
    a) "The folks at Students Of Decay must have objected..."
    b) "Go figure what motivates people..."
    or
    c) "Perhaps it's only meant for the ears of the privileged few"
as being slams? Notably, Alex didn't take my comments it in the manner that you have.
I think that the drama and and nefarious subtext that you're reading into this is entirely confined to your own perceptions.

    ReplyDelete
  27. All I'm saying is that labels/artists should be able to object to their art being posted on a blog (w/out their consent) in anyway they feel like without the fear of being called out. I'm not trying to bring "drama" or anything "nefarious" into the discussion. Just making a comment on something I feel is important as we in the blog world move forward. Perhaps a move toward "permission based posting" is in order. Who knows? I'm just posing questions more than anything. Not trying to stir things up, but just start a dialogue. Perhaps this isn't the place, and if that is so, I apologize.

    Peace.

  28. would you happen to have Dieter Schutz TransVision?

  29. I want to echo the Dieter Schütz request, although I would like to hear either the Dawn or Voyage LPs, or preferably both!

I didn't even know he had an album called TransVision.

    Rauf und runter!
