Disc 16: Vogel featuring Ivor Cutler-Guten Morgen ArschlochWell, this sprawling beast (clocking in at around 2 1/2 hours of music) took two full days to pull together, so it's gonna be my sole post for this round, but hopefully it's one that'll fill in a lot of desired blanks for those that recognize the centrality of R.I.O. in general and Recommended Records in particular to any discussion of adventurous music, as the contents herein offers both a spot on crash course in the idiom for the uninitiated and, for those already keyed into this vibe, a trawl through the obscure odds 'n' ends bin of some of the most radical bands of the last 30+ years; this jaw-dropping doorstop of a boxset serving as the repository for all of the accumulated bonus singles that had come with subscriber's editions of albums issued by this nonpareil Rock In Opposition imprint over the years (barring the Art Bears' Rats & Monkeys single, which was issued by Ralph). Sure, some of of this stuff has appeared elsewhere in the intervening years (most notably the four Faust sides, which were later repurposed for their Last LP and the subsequent 71 Minutes Of Faust CD), but it felt essential to make this set available in it's complete form, as the cumulative impact of experiencing all this back to back makes this one of the most impressive artifacts of the scene in existance, not least for the inclusion of the Art Bears' quietly harrowing Coda To Man And Boy, which gets my vote for the most sublime guitar work that Fred Frith has ever laid to tape. All the aforesaid does however come with the proviso that the 11-13 minute per side duration of the Art Zoyd single and The Recommended Sampler EP make both sound like they were pressed on recycled truck tires.

I visited the recommeded shop in 1986. the reason recommended put out the box set was they had all these singles that no one was buying. once the box set was put together, these singles became highly sought after and the boxes were flying off the shelves.

hi. just wanted to let you know that the part3-file is corrupt. i've downloaded it from both hosters to be sure, but i cannot extract the data from the zip file. i've also tried with different softwares. the file is definetly broken. the other parts worked fine.

ReplyDeleteThanks a whole lot for this lot! I was one of the subscribers to this set as it came out. Sold it ALL to cheap in the early 90s. Have recovered most of the music through dl's, but not the full set as a whole - with complete artworks/inserts! Feels almost like having the hardcopy again.

ReplyDeleteI actually have one of these, ordered on subscription in 1985. It is still one of the most remarkable pieces of music/art I own. The breadth of creativity in the music is astonishing, and beautiful, unique packaging like this largely (and sadly) became a thing of the past with the shift to CD. I've been a huge fan of RIO/Recommended since the seminal '82 sampler, and have talked and interviewed many of the artists over the past 25 years. This reminds me of a time when I had to mail away and wait for months for such exotic, unusual fare--no blogs or torrents then! Thanks very much for this; saves me from digitizing it! Great blog BTW.

is anyone else having trouble unzipping track 22 from pt. 2 of the zipfile? it shows a really long title unlike all the others. not sure if that matters but it says "file not found" whenever i try to unzip it/drag it to the new folder.
