Well, this sprawling beast (clocking in at around 2 1/2 hours of music) took two full days to pull together, so it's gonna be my sole post for this round, but hopefully it's one that'll fill in a lot of desired blanks for those that recognize the centrality of R.I.O. in general and Recommended Records in particular to any discussion of adventurous music, as the contents herein offers both a spot on crash course in the idiom for the uninitiated and, for those already keyed into this vibe, a trawl through the obscure odds 'n' ends bin of some of the most radical bands of the last 30+ years; this jaw-dropping doorstop of a boxset serving as the repository for all of the accumulated bonus singles that had come with subscriber's editions of albums issued by this nonpareil Rock In Opposition imprint over the years (barring the Art Bears' Rats & Monkeys single, which was issued by Ralph). Sure, some of of this stuff has appeared elsewhere in the intervening years (most notably the four Faust sides, which were later repurposed for their Last LP and the subsequent 71 Minutes Of Faust CD), but it felt essential to make this set available in it's complete form, as the cumulative impact of experiencing all this back to back makes this one of the most impressive artifacts of the scene in existance, not least for the inclusion of the Art Bears' quietly harrowing Coda To Man And Boy, which gets my vote for the most sublime guitar work that Fred Frith has ever laid to tape. All the aforesaid does however come with the proviso that the 11-13 minute per side duration of the Art Zoyd single and The Recommended Sampler EP make both sound like they were pressed on recycled truck tires.

  5. I am in disbelief that 1/10 of the music I find here on this Blog, and this release in particular, exists (and got by me). Maybe we should recommend the owner of Mutant Sounds for Knighthood?

  7. Holy shit. Your ability to procure objects of music that I have no knowledge of continues to amaze me. Keep it up.

  8. This is INCREDIBLE ! How do you manage to put your hands on such rarities ? Thanks for sharing them.

I spent years searching for the Lindsay Cooper "pictures from the great exhibition" and suddenly I found 2 versions on different upload offers. The first I found was here (by the way, everyone interested in this post should seek the compilation below) :

  10. I visited the recommeded shop in 1986. the reason recommended put out the box set was they had all these singles that no one was buying. once the box set was put together, these singles became highly sought after and the boxes were flying off the shelves.

  13. goddamn, this is massive, and all the artwork too...

I'm pretty unfamiliar with these names, as I am with most of the things you post, so I'm really looking forward to finding out what all this is about... *_*

    thank you!

    thanks!

  16. Goodness me. What a post. I've got a copy of the David Thomas 45 somewhere over *there* (peers at box of little-heard items languishing sadly on a shelf out of the reach of little 'uns), but this is a feast indeed. Many, many thanks!

  21. 329 Mb of art work was a bit too much so i resized the set...sharing it for some of you (size is 48 Mb) here

(those are 25% of original size & 50 % or o.s. resizes that still do the work for me).if you are on mac you can zoom holding ctrl and two fingers move...

kudos for all the efforts you put into this blog!

  29. I really can't believe it, like all the others, this is unbelievaby incredible, personally I'm amazed by the racaille EP, is it possible you might have the other album he did, called flots bleus? Not able to find it anywhere!

  31. I stumbled on your Web site in my surfing, and I am amazed by all the obscure, cool recordings you have made available to curious music lovers like myself. The box set looks amazing, and I look forward to listening. Thanks for all your hard work!

  32. Thanks a whole lot for this lot! I was one of the subscribers to this set as it came out. Sold it ALL to cheap in the early 90s. Have recovered most of the music through dl's, but not the full set as a whole - with complete artworks/inserts! Feels almost like having the hardcopy again.

  33. Bravo! Hail to the chief: Rock in Opposition was never more relevant than in Twentyten! / Happy trayles from Sir R. Stevie Moore in NJ.

  34. I actually have one of these, ordered on subscription in 1985. It is still one of the most remarkable pieces of music/art I own. The breadth of creativity in the music is astonishing, and beautiful, unique packaging like this largely (and sadly) became a thing of the past with the shift to CD. I've been a huge fan of RIO/Recommended since the seminal '82 sampler, and have talked and interviewed many of the artists over the past 25 years. This reminds me of a time when I had to mail away and wait for months for such exotic, unusual fare--no blogs or torrents then! Thanks very much for this; saves me from digitizing it! Great blog BTW.

  36. Absoutely great blog, but unfortunately pt. 3 of the zips doesn't work, even not in the compressed version v! posted. Maybe it's a mistake in file naming?
If you might find a moment ...
    Thanks anyway for wonderful posts!

  37. 2nd request: what is password? Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  38. gerireig-there isn't one. Neither I not Jim have ever used passwords for a single post on MS. I totally hate the things. And I unfortunately have no answer as to why they'd be showing up for you. It seems that hundreds of others have opened and enjoyed these files with no issues. Wish I could help...

    ReplyDelete
  39. gulp! thank you for this! I already love half those artists, and can't wait to check the other half. great work, as usual!

    ReplyDelete
  40. wait, I gotta say one more thing: I've been grabbing things from your blog for a couple of years now, and I've got to compliment you on the archival quality of not only the audio, but especially the metadata that accompanies it; it's invaluable to have precise titles, artist credits, etc., especially on these rare vinyl finds, which are obviously a labor of love...good on ye...

    ReplyDelete
  41. thank you very much, this is amazing

  42. Superb, a truly act of love, sharity and faith.... I wish I could do the same for you people somehow.
I was alive and kicking these days so is nice to recapture some aural memories from them days.
    All the best, your humble

  44. is anyone else having trouble unzipping track 22 from pt. 2 of the zipfile? it shows a really long title unlike all the others. not sure if that matters but it says "file not found" whenever i try to unzip it/drag it to the new folder.

  45. i must wonder and ask where you found this set as i sold mine in a time of serious illness and poverty (recovered) 97/98 Melbourne "collectors corner". Anyway good to see out in the ether it truly is a journey of wonder. Mr Moss
