JOHN DUNCAN-THE KEENING TOWERS, CD, 2003, USA

One of the finest (if most harrowing) outings extant from this former performance artist and long time post-industrial sonic provocateur, whose often extremely powerful work has found a myriad of ways to express states of stasis as transcendence and the purgatorial power within a certain sort of sand blasted austerity, most often realized via shortwave manipulation. Here though, it's churning layers of effects-shattered children's voices that form the sonic putty that Duncan molds over the course of this 70 minute epic, its malevolent swarm meant to evoke the cries of abused infants. Eegads. Factored against the nature of some of the (ahem) visual content of his early performances, this makes for queasy listening on more than one level...
