COPING WITH RAPIDSHARE'S NEW TACTICS

Rapidshare's dreadful new policies that go into effect as of today limit the number of files that can be downloaded in a 24 hour period from a paid account. They've set a cap of 30 gigs of data that can be downloaded from paid Rapidshare accounts by members of the public per day. Given the scale of the Mutant archive and the number of people routinely downloading music here, it's been necessary to do a furious amount of work behind the scene this week to try to offset this, but my efforts are only part of the way there as of yet.

So far, two additional Rapidshare accounts have been created to offset this load, which means that older Mutant files will eventually be spread across four accounts, but transferring files is a time and labor intensive process, so I'll kindly ask you all to please bear with us for the next several weeks as more and more files get shifted around to evenly disperse them. So far, 100 of the most popular older titles have been transferred to their own account and I'll be spending the next week or two transferring others, but in the meantime, it's quite possible that you will encounter a new message from Rapidshare saying that my account's limits have been reached for the day and to please try again the following day.

There will be no new posts for this coming two week cycle as I try and come to grips with this huge new workload, and when new shares return, I will experiment with upping those ones using Mediafire, even though they too have badly screwed me in the past as well. Frankly, even with four accounts hosting these files, there is a definite possibility that you might still run up against these download limitations. It's hugely frustrating, but until Megaupload re-emerge with their new model, this is about the best that I can think to do for now.

There IS however something that Mutant Sounds fans themselves can do to help: if you love this blog and want to show your appreciation, create mediafire mirrors of any files that you enjoy and post them in the comment fields for the albums. If enough of these build up, it will help a great deal.

Have you considered creating bundles of files and torrenting them, allowing the readers who can afford sharing the bandwidth/disk space to maintain the files continually available? Is there some downside to this approach I'm not thinking of?

[I'm not sure if I submitted this more than once, apologies if so and please delete the duplicates]

They really know how to wreck a good business model... don't they.

man I just want you to commend doing all this. I imagine how much time and willpower this is taking and your love for the music and the need to share it is great.

I kind of agree with the anonymous poster above, at least it could be a plan b so the bundles keep circulated. I don't have a crazy bandwith but could try to seed as much as I can.

on another note, I'm a graphic designer frequently working with zine like things, and of quite a non-design aesthetic etc. if you ever think of slightly redesigning this place (maybe even more non-design it) or something, hit me up

I'm looking for: YVES ET ALAIN LORENTZ - ESPACES 2 ~ Rolf Schulz ‎– Tambora »Klangfeuer« ~ Steve Maxwell Von Braund – Monster Planet ~ Prominent Disturbance - S/T ~ Direct Sound - Five Voices. Also check this link http://www.discogs.com/wantlist?user=SoundsStrange&page=1 - If you have anything from my wants list that you want to trade for the Derbyshire album / anything else on my collection, let me know in these comments.

No problem, and thank you and the rest of MS's maintainers for uploading those and the others in the first place!

I love your blog, but am afraid I don't know how to help you..
I don't know how to make .rar files, I don't have a blog, and I don't know if I could have the time to learn....
Just know your blog has been an immensely important part of my music experience. Thanks so much...

Once again, your persistence and relentless hard work in the face of a series of major obstacles that would have vanquished others is noted and appreciated!

Mediafire arbitrarily deletes files constantly, so they're to be discounted out of hand and I'd advise any newbie to avoid them like syphilis.

This is beyond belief! I have just sent the below email to these wankers:

I have been a paying user of Rapidshare for the past 5 years and have got to say that your decision to limit the number of files that can be downloaded in a 24 hour period from a paid account is absolutely the last straw where using your service is concerned. I use your service to download long-deleted music from sites like Mutant Sounds, have watched in annoyance as you have indiscriminately removed files from such customer's accounts, and am now furious that you show the same level of disrespect to customers who pay to download from you.

My latest subscription to your service lapses in two weeks and will not be renewed. You are no longer providing what I consider to be a service and so you will no longer receive money from people who have in the past supported you.

What about an FTP server we could donate to maintain? Or are you worried that that would actually be crossing a line?

erreur_fatale said...

Try FTP...either way, you guys are amazing. This blog has opened my ears and eyes and blown my mind countless times over by exposing me to music I would likely never have had the opportunity to hear. A million thanks for the initial effort and the relentless dedication in the past year. <3

the only decent storage locker i've found in the wake of megaupload is adrive. they grant free users up to 50gb (or at least they did earlier this year) w/ amazing customer service (fer a free acct, no less) & their premium rates seem extremely reasonable. content is stored on their servers indefinitely + they've never deleted nuffin o mines. i dont recommend em lightly. other words, i highly recommend lookin into em: adrive.com
we're owl slaves to shite we hate, but crapidshare dont need to be one of em. just sayin. this could be a major game-charger fer ya. stay loose

Another possibility: files could be uploaded to usenet and an nzb link or file could be provided to download. Retention on good usenet services are up to over 1500 days, and the costs are down around 11 dollars per month for lightning fast unlimited downloads (see Astraweb usenet service, for example). This seems like a plausible workaround for the horrendous file-locker situation.

I second the Adrive endorsement.
