MAHOGANY BRAIN-SMOOTH SICK LIGHTS, LP/CD, 1972 (CD REISSUE: 1997), FRANCE, NWW LIST

Drug damaged willful perversity and inspired amateurism from this Nurse With Wound-listed anarchic French underground mob. Corollaries could be made with The Godz, Frolkhaven and the like, but the particular taste left on the palate here (burned brains in black butter?), is decidedly specific; it's structural disjunctions clearly paving the way for later French units like Heratius. This is taken from the 1997 CD reissue, which includes a full 22 minutes of previously unreleased material.

hey, this is an interesting post. I got a question for you; are there just 9 tracks on this? I see the last one is around 22 min, but that would make this orig lp only 24 min or so. just curious...

rickk-actually, 24 minutes or so was in fact the original running length of this album. French LP's of the era were often notably short, this being perhaps the shortest of all to still be marketed as an LP.

You stuck the year 1972 on the end of the archive name when in fact this LP was originally released in 1976. Just thought you'd want to know.

"Burning the Vibes" is thoroughly awesome. Perhaps the greatest bonus track in the history of CD reissues. Well... maybe it's tied with "Triad" on the Notorious Byrd Brothers CD.

yeah... and this is pôle (tapioca) records release. thanks!

Frostymug-the date of both it's recording and it's original release are both clearly stated on the 1997 Spalax CD reissue as being 1972. It's also listed as such on the Gnosis site (www.gnosis2000.net), which is usually on the money with these things.

Allways wanted to hear this band,it seems people fall into 2 camps over them, its either praised or put down as rubbish. Finally I get to make up my own mind, and I have to say it is a very good album, perhaps people just don't get that loose, impro weirdness & are expecting something different.I allways mix up the tracks of new bands I am playing so as not to know which band I am actually listening to,that way I have know preconceptions.
Babbling aside;thank you for a great new play.

I'm pretty sure (89% sure, that is) this was released on Pôle in '72 and reissued on Tapioca in '76. Strange how this almost sounds like no wave several years before the fact, isn't it? Many thanks for posting this!

in fact it was released in 1972 and never released until 1976 on pole, bought in the fall by tapioca. the A side is composed by "green winter of revolver" "cathedral skirts" "church" and "purple overdose n°102". the B side filled with "silkskin dawn" "tongues movie : doctor cloud" "rose sad sea" and "diamond voices of stars". it lasts approximately 25 minutes and is often reported to be artisticly close to the velvet underground's eponymous album

why no rapidshare anymore? All others don't work for me. Please re-up...thanks

automating-People seem to have a hard time grasping this one, but there are two posters here. JIm posts via Rapidshare, I post using Massmirror. If you cant get the massmirror links to Megaupload, Badongo or Zshare to work, there's something wrong with your computer, not the links. All those services are gold standard and work every time, just as it's working for me right....now. Try removing your pop up blocker and see if that helps.

thank so much for this amazing messed up album! any more of theirs?

Michel Bulteau is still alive and kicking in Paris, I bumped into him a few weeks ago. He has recorded with French noise guitarist Jean-François Pauvros and is currently working with Rhys Chatham.

Here's a real head-scratcher: I picked up a vinyl copy of this (on Tapioca). Side one is the first four songs as posted above. Side two bears the label that it should. The grooves, though, rather than "silkskin dawn" and the rest of the album, contain two songs of very tight, intricate prog by some other band. Lots of organ, flashy bass-pluck proficiency, and english lyrics about horses and maidens. WTF?
No, I'm not smoking anything weird, though it feels like being in Ubik, the decay of the illusory world starting with my records...
