ALPHABETICAL UPLOADS OF WHACKED OUT SINGLES PT. 6

What follows is the sixth installment in my ongoing series of postings of singles from the vdoandsound archives.

C.U.B.S.-S/T EP, 1981, GERMANY
A giddy and insanely fun new wave quirkfest strongly calling to mind Andy Partridge of XTC's soujourns to the land of Residential weirdity circa his "Take Away/The Lure Of Salvage" deconstruction project and XTC's Homo Safari instrumentals. Not what you'd normally expect from a Neue Deutsche Welle outfit and all the better for it.

CURRENT OBSESSIONS-S/T EP, 1982, UK
The scrappy D.I.Y. packaging doesn't really prepare one for the subtle art pop pleasures found in these grooves which take in both archly elegant Slapp Happy-isms and a certain elusive David Cunningham je ne sais quoi ala his work with General Strike.

DAG VAG & SVAGSINTA-DIMMA/NAR VARDEN SLAR TILL, 1978, SWEDEN
Intense, snarly and fascinating Swedish post punk electronic rock with distinct overtones of NWW-listers Ilitch circa "Ten Suicides".

DELIR NOIR/LYSSA HUMANA-KRATZ COLLAGEN, FLEXIDISC, EARLY 90'S, GERMANY
Completely unknown micro-press German split flexi, with Delir Noir commingling sax splatter with electronic mulch in a sorta Van Bebber/Hubweber style on the A side and Lyssa Humana offering up scramblified dada sound collage on the flip.

DELTA-DIAGRAMS OF WOMEN/MR. E. CHAOS, 1980, USA
Top notch minimal synth mega-rarity reminding me of The Corridor Des Affairs on "Diagrams Of Women" while the flip finds them in the land of Ralph Records madcap smurfiness.

DEMENTIA PRECOX-MINES/DEAD ON 2 LEGS LUNCHEONETTE, 1981, USA
A sickly brilliant (and sadly brief) single from this synth punk into minimal synth unit. The savage, vocally warped "Mines' will haunt your dreams. Their 2 rare LP's are soon to follow...

PHILIPPE DE MOUCTOURIS-47s DE ROUGE DANS UNE BIBLE NOIRE/SONG FOR GURDJIEFF/LES SALONS D'ITHAQUE, 1982, FRANCE
Warped R.I.O.-ish French art damage somewhere between the Residential Germain Hubert Ales EP I hoisted in a previous "Alphabetical Uploads..." post and Hans Reichel.

DERRIBOS ARIAS-APRENDA ALEMAN EN 7 DIAS/LILI MARLEEN, 1983, SPAIN
Rare Spanish Casio rhythm-fill minimal synthiness with a certain dumb charm on "Aprenda..." while Lili Marleen comes off a bit like a daft quarter speed take on something from Eno's Here Come The Warm Jets.

thanx a lot for your supergood musical taste... i find a lot of great music on your blog..

i now have a problem with unpacking the first part of ALPHABETICAL UPLOADS OF WHACKED OUT SINGLES PT. 6 both when i try to use my win rar and total commander to do it... total commander says the disk is full (which is not true i can unpack the 2.part without any trouble)... and win rar says that it could not find the definded path.

is it a malefunction of my computer set up or is there a problem with the zipfile? can you please check it.

i really look foreward to the CUBS single which got a lot of good reviews in the german independent music press (sounds and spex) when it came back in the 80´s, but i newer had the oppurtunity to listen to it so far.

thank you
a music loving dane

nice post!

I love this series.

P.S:-did 'Red Transistor' do anything else apart from the 'Not Bite' 7"?

asger-the experience of many who've downloaded from this blog suggests that when issues like this arise, using 7-zip to unstuff them almost always does the trick: www.7-zip.org/

Hope that helps...

7-zip only extracted 2 files from part two and none from part one for me.

You need to use Winzip and you can unpack the "whacked out singles" archives fine. Winzip, winzip, winzip!

thnx vdoandsound

Part 1 can not be extracted. I tried zip, 7zip, rar, stuffit. The problem is the long filenames inside the zip. It has been made with unix system.

I found a solution. Just open with 7zip and mark the files without front dots, then extract

Okay, WinZip did it. I thought I had it installed already, but I didn't.

Why would you guys use WinRAR on a ZIP file? Makes no sense. You're trying to unpack a ZIP file, not a RAR file (Eric's posts are always ZIP files, while Jim's are usually RAR's).

Therefore use something like WinRAR for Jim's posts, but not Eric's. You're just asking for problems, otherwise.

I love these singles posts. Short attention span, I guess.

I have a request. The band and the A-side are "Man Tit" and the label was Dunlap. It was a NY release. Thurston Moore mentioned it once in an interview. Maybe you can help? "M" looks like it's still a year off in this series of posts, but I guess I've waited 20 since the Forced Exposure interview.

Regarding the problem others have reported about unzipping a zip file. I also had a problem with part 1 of this file but I solved it somehow and then forgot what I did. Here are three suggestions:

I've encountered problems on a PC where the overall file path and name exceed some maximum length. Since "V.A.-Alphabetical_Uploads_of_Whacked_Out_Singles_Pt._6_section_1_.zip" appears twice in the directory string of this download, it seems like a likely candidate for the cause of the problem. You might try reducing the overall file path length by unzipping the file to "C:\TEMP" (for example) ... rather than "C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\My Documents\My Music\Whatever Other Directories You Use".

This would explain why some people experience the problem and others don't, since it will depend on where you're unzipping to.

I've also sometimes opened a problem zip file and "drag-and-dropped" the files out of it.

In extreme cases I have right-clicked on a file inside a zip and chosen "Open With" "i-Tunes", then inside i-Tunes "Convert selection to mp3".

Hope the above is comprehensible.

Love the site. I'm only disappointed that you had to change from Massmirror.

You know, descriptions like "Ralph Records madcap smurfiness" can be shortened to "Zolo". It is about time, don't you think?

As always I adore your exact descriptions. I just discovered the great Current Obsessions - shame on me, I had overlooked it at first, must have been in my "Don't I have everything I need?" mood. Reminds me also of Inflatable Boy Clams and Cos around their "Swiß Chalet" time, the quality of this music is amazing. Thank you!!
