STEVE THOMSEN-WESTERN VACATION, CDR, 2002 (RECORDED: 1982-2002), USA

On the heels of umpteen other posts of both L.A. Free Music Society vet Thomsen's solo albums as well as his work with both Solid Eye and Monitor, here's another round of his patented syrupy surrealism. The pieces on Western Vacation, as I understand it, were initially composed as sketches for full band arrangements but it was determined after the fact that these compositions stood up on their own, and indeed they do; Thomsen here erecting oleaginously undulating cycles of heat warped quasi-cartoonish keyboard motifs as per his usual wont, though skewing the arrangements slightly to accommodate daubs of faux western thematics, all campy plastic cactuses and fan blown tumbleweeds.
