PETER JEFFERIES-SUBSTATIC, CD, 1998, NEW ZEALAND

A one-time member of both Plagal Grind and This Kind Of Punishment (the latter posted previously by Jim), Peter Jefferies remains one of the South Island more notable figures of their 80's/90's underground, but this late 90's solo missive remains his masterpiece. Like several other left field indie travellers of this period (Village Of Savoonga, Tone Rec and Brise-Glace come to mind), the sensibility and gravity of Substatic is heavily indebted to the pioneering work of This Heat, specifically the artfully looming tension and delayed release of their eponymous debut, though persistent piano pound supplants reedy organ wheeze in Jefferies take on this template. It's a tack that milks momentous weightiness from the spare and remote and it's a breathtaking thing to behold.

Peter is from New Plymouth, thats in the north island of NZ. He now spends his time teaching drums to delinquent youth who have no idea who/what he is.

Plagal Grind was Alastair Galbraith's old band...I love Alastair Galbraith...I am looking forward to this one.

Never managed to find a copy of anything by Plagal Grind.

hi,MS.This is one of the nicest posts of last months.I like JEFFERIES brothers work very much.Allow me only please to disagree with the expression: "his masterpiece".The great leaps forward in Peter`s music has become many years before 1998.This fine album more or less repeats (successfully, it is true)the basic aesthetics, ideas, methods, techniques with previous works of TKOP or solo efforts like "the last great challenge.." or the more close in time "elevator madness".In moments,SUBSTATIC wants to meet the post rock style of the era though Peter`s works are easily beyond/above it (not to say that THIS KIND OF PUNISHMENT founded so many things that in 90`s appeared as "new").Of course, this is a no less loving album for those who know him, even though the most catalytic element of his aesthetic, his singing, is missing from here.
People interested in Jefferis music, they can download PETER JEFFERIES "elevator madness" from LA FOLIE DU JOUR.(01fragments.blogspot.com).Anyway...
thanks for giving the people good music.Sharing the art of beauty is like pointing out the truth.

"Electricity" and "The Last Great Challenge In A Dull World" are Peter Jefferies two best solo albums, IMO. Personally, I thought "Elevator Madness" sucked.
