ISOLATION "Isolation" LP 1973 UK

ISOLATION are one of the most obscure UK folk acts. Released as a micro-private edition in 1973 (on the Riverside label), their unique album is a loner folk wonder, hinting sometimes at jazzy psych climates. The hazy melancholy of the music remind strongly of the first Nick Drake album and the finger-styled guitar, nods at Davey Graham. The whole album has a very cohesive feel and the simple sound reflects the limitations of instrumentation; the organic natural sound of acoustic instruments seems to fit the music perfectly and the subtle interplay between acoustic guitars with piano and flute come as a natural cross between a folkier version of UNICORN and the moody aspects of OBERON. A strong album of the 70ies underground folk scene and a monster rarity, selling more than 1,200 € these days.

SHOULDER OF MUTTON A-THREATENING HIZZ, LP, 1980, GERMANY

As requested by Jim, Shoulder Of Mutton A's concoctions are as sublime as they are fried. Interestingly, this masterpiece of art rock weirdness owes not a whit to any tendencies being explored elsewhere within either the Neue Deutshe Welle scene or whatever remained of a krautrock scene by that late date. Rather, Shoulder Of Mutton A musically belong to that much vaunted (well...here anyway) post Beefheart/post Residents continuum that takes in the likes of Steaming Coils, Bomis Prendin, Buxinrut and The Decayes (to name but a few), a species of advanced musical sickness that should have insured these cat's legends ages ago.

KATAHTONIOS-S/T, LP, 1991, UK

Beyond alerting everyone that, point for point and note for note, this album sounds virtually indistinguishable from Werkbund (numerous of whose albums have been posted here over time), there's very little for me to offer here, not least due to the fact that Katahtonios have studiously avoided providing even a trace of info anywhere (not even song titles). What little I've managed to glean is that someone online cited the release date as 1991 and that at the time I got it, a distributor told me it was of Scottish origin. Whatever the case, the hallucinogenic netherworld hidden within this velvet bagged cloak is a thing of rare and unsettling beauty.

ARBETE OCH FRITID-S/T, LP, 1973, SWEDEN

First off, this is NOT the same album as the other self titled release by these masters of Swedish communal-ethno-drone-trudge-improv-festival-psych, which was posted here by Jim some time ago. Rather, this is their second self titled album (and their third album chronologically) and it's substantially more indebted to their native musical folklore than the other titles of theirs that I've posted, with about 2/3 of this comprised of their interpretations of traditional Swedish songs, a tack that, once you've acclimated yourself to it's wiles, provides it's own distinct set of pleasures.

MARBLE SHEEP & THE RUN DOWN SUN'S CHILDREN-OLD FROM NEW HEADS, CD, 1993 (RECORDED: 1987), JAPAN

Before Grateful Dead emulation would ultimately lead them toward flakier pastures, these Japanese psych mavens were kicking up dense morasses of of coruscating freakout motion which, during this early era were laden with the stunning acid guitar flailings of White Heaven's Michio Kurihara. Amon Duul usually gets namechecked when this era of Marble Sheep is discussed, which is superficially accurate given the percussive density involved here, but completely misses the mark in terms of vibe, which is here aiming for a sort of howling heart of darkness that the bongo beaters of the original Amon Duul tribe never sought.

PETE & ROYCE "Suffering of Tomorrow" LP 1980 (Greece)

Despite its extreme scarceness, this is a very important record concerning the evolution of the greek underground of the late 70ies. In order to recapture the spirit of the days, I will relate its release with a brief description of the socio-political framework of the greek scene of the times.

The presence of the military junta during the late sixties and early seventies has been quite a deterrent for the local rock scene, having prevented a musical development concurrent with that of other European countries. To complete the picture, after the restitution of democracy, there was the obvious hostility of the greek communist party towards the "cultural imperialism of U.S. patterns of life" that was added to the overall paranoia. Under these political constraints, the mid seventies heralded an explosion in the greek underground scene. Not only in music but also in all other forms of art as well as in political activism, a stream of radical innovation was omnipresent. The principal expressions of this phenomenon were the gradual change of several areas in Athens to freak hang-outs (Plaka and Exarchia Square), the turning into rock clubs of many traditional folk music taverns and in general the adoption of alternative lifestyles by the most advanced of the younger people. Thus, a small radical core began to show its presence nearly everywhere in the big cities, spurred on primarily by the fall of the military regime but also by an obvious desire for social change. Having to face a new, uncontrolled phenomenon, the conservative greek society undertook a hostile stance, with the mass media printing slurring against the new movement and approving the autocracy of the suppressive forces. As was to be foreseen this behaviour did nothing if not strengthen the cohesion of the alternative scene. A space for free and virtually limitless forms of expression was opened and many bands quit their previous mainstream direction and jumped on the alternative bandwagon. Unfortunately the local record companies were reluctant to release any underground rock music, not necessarily from a political but rather from a commercial point of view: they assumed that there wasn't enough of a potential audience for the genre to make it worth while. Thus, the majority of the groups of the era disappeared without leaving any recorded traces.

PETE & ROYCE were one of the few local progressive bands operating in such framework (others like PLJ BAND for instance, never identified with the alternative rock audiences in order to achieve a major label deal). Led by painter Pete Tsiros, they have made a name in the underground network, based on lengthy "hazy" concerts and an uncompromising underground attitude. Their sound was deeply rooted in the UK progressive scene, sitting somewhere between the prog/psych sound of mid-period PINK FLOYD and the mellotron school (FANTASY, CRESSIDA, KESTREL, early B.J.H.), resulting in a style heavily relying on mellow soundscapes.

During spring 1980 they captured on self-released vinyl the best tracks of their live shows. "Suffering of Tomorrow", was one of the very first greek private releases (on the mysterious Octoichos label) and the band's debut album, loosely based on the concept of death and decay (it is dedicated to Tsiros' deceased brother). A period piece undoubtfuly, but with that exquisite basement feel encountered in the early 70ies british proto-progressive bands it is one of the essential Greek progressive albums of all times. Their second offering "Days of Destruction" (1981 _Ocean) was somewhat more unevenly balanced, as folky progressive influences were blended together with a more mainstream and somewhat uninspired approach; funky orientated mainstream sounds and afroamerican female vocals. They disbanded in 1982, during the era of the punk boom, due to general indifference towards their recorded output and their members were lost from the music scene.

Track list (in the correct order NOT displayed on the album's sleeve):

Side A
1) Flickering Light
2) It's So Unreal
3) Flowers
4) Suffering of Tomorrow

Side B
1) Time
2) Years Beyond
i. Maybe
ii. Face of the Moon
iii. Round Your Grave

PS. This is for those who invested their youths in endless musical conversations at the cafes around Exarchia square and the rock clubs of Plaka, countless hours of record hunting on the first floor of Pop Eleven store and Monastiraki used bins, Sunday morning concerts at Athens' cinemas and nostalgically remember that very special communal feel of the musical underground.

ROCK FELLER-S/T, 12" EP, 1983, FRANCE

This was the project of one Dorian Feller, who's memberships in mutant fringe R.I.O. units Look De Bouk (whom I'l be posting work by soon) and Germain Hubert Ales (which I already posted as part of my first Alphabetical Singles uploads) makes him something of an unacknowledged kingpin of French underground musical lunacy. With Rock Feller, the emphasis is on precisely what's implied, though his vision of "rock" as evidenced here correlates more with the giddy post punk malformations of The Homosexuals than most of what was transpiring in France at the time. A thing of rare beauty, this is and just about the most obscure record on Denis Tagu's Ayaa imprint (effectively, the French Recommended Records) to boot.

BUXINRUT-RADIO ZONE 16, LP, 1982, USA

Sincerely astonishing lo-fi Beefheartian avant rock workouts from a terminally obscure Delaware art damage unit whose closest musical touchstone would be the equally obscure American outfit Iltar (posted by Jim a while back). It's a sound that NWW-listers The Decayes and Bomis Prendin were also at varying times both teetering on the edge of, though those acts' relentless mutability insured that these sort of tendencies wouldn't be followed through to their illogical conclusion, as they are here.

RANDY GREIF-BACTERIA AND GRAVITY, LP, 1987, USA

Following Jim's post of his Lost Contact and It's In A Box tapes, this vinyl debut of Greif's work is for me one of the highest points in the discography of this evocative experimentalist. Greif's sensibility was hitting something of a critical mass on this one, his fevered malarial inversion of Jon Hassell's fourth world aesthetic creating an atmosphere that reeks of Werner Herzog's vision of wilderness as oppressive and deathly.

KARERA MUSICATION-KOROSHIYA ICHI-ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK, CD, 2003, JAPAN

Essentially The Boredoms minus Eye, this manifestation was put together to record the soundtrack to Takashi Miike's Ichi The Killer and yes...most of The Boredoms' ass-backward musical signifiers can be located within this schizophrenic soundstew, though much of this sidesteps their latterly turn toward drum-centric space trekking in favor of privileging a more piecemeal approach to mindfuckery, something that the format necessitates.

BABA YAGA "Collage" LP 1974 (Germany)

First of all I would like to thank both my friends Jim and Eric for inviting me to contribute to this wonderful blog. For my first post, I will dedicate to them and to all of you an extreme kraut rock obscurity from 1974, BABA YAGA's second album "Collage" on the Phonola label.

BABA YAGA were not a proper group but a duo collaboration of MY SOLID GROUND's keyboard wizard Ingo Werner and iranian multi instrumentalist Nemat Darman. Both their albums had been issued in 1974 but it is their second one "Collage" which is the real brain melting obscurity. A hybrid of heavy electronic krautrock with ethnic spiced POPOL VUH exoticism and abstract THIRD EAR BAND cum early BETWEEN esoteric weirdisms, this is the best example of blissful far out krautrock grandeur.

PS. The album had been recorded during the cheap late night recording sessions at Dieter Dierks studio and engineered by a certain Tobby Robinson; the same man involved with the obscure Pyramid albums that surfaced during the mid 90ies through the british ACME label (though I strongly doubt their original existence).

Banda do Casaco- Dos beneficios de um vendido no reino dos bonifacios,LP,1974,Portugal

Banda do Casaco, a group whose music is based at the same time in the deep roots of tradition with cosmopolitan influences and in an urbanity still very marked by the rural and work Portugal cultures. The lyrics are very sarcastic, ironic and lucid.Musically, the group made in Portugal (in Rádio Triunfo studios) what José Mário Branco and José Afonso had made in France (in Strawberry studios) 3 years before: a completely vanguardist sound and inteligent arrangements.
The use of the 8 musicians and its instruments potencials put the listner in front of a surprizing and stimulating debut album. We must notice the string instruments (violin, guitars and cellos) and the two female vocal singers' performance (Judi Brennan and Helena Afonso).
For its magnificent arrangements, we must mention some songs: 3 - the folk and popular tales in the percussions and flute arrangements (“Vade retro Satanás / T’arrenego Belzebu / Ai Jesus cruzes canhoto / Lagarto, lagarto, lagarto”); 4 - a typical progressive construction, with part changes (note as the candle and religion smells gets to our noses when the two singers say cantam “(chegaram carros àquela igreja) toda enfeitada” \ "(cars arrived to that church) well ornamented"; 5 - a nice melody achieved by voices, guitars and violin (it remembers “Linda Pastorinha”, recorded in 79 by Almanaque, a record produced by Nuno Rodrigues, the same composer of almost songs of this Banda do Casaco album); 7 - the inicial folklore, based on violin and with a second part majestically epic, with trumpet in the back and the cellos dramatic sounding; 9 - a monster speakes in a cave and a female melody echoes, enprisioned; by the 25 second and until the end of the first section the contrabass and guitar reminds “Era Um Redondo Vocábulo”, by José Afonso (1973) 10 - melody based at piano and vibraphone with a electric guitar arrangements that sound King Crimson and Robert Fripp in “Moonchild” (1969).
After one hears this first album we might think time hasn't passed. Or that was no time to pass even. More that 30 years after its original release, this time is still unprepared to these songs.
Great complex folk progressive LP ,with much use of violin, flutes, acoustic guitar by the band thar came from the remains of Filarmónica Fraude.

Lady Junes Linguistic Leprosy-st,LP,1974,UK

Born to Russian and Scottish parents, June Campbell Cramer was raised in Plymouth and received a strict education. In the late fifties, she studied at art college, and from the early sixties spent most of her time living in Spain, painting and working as a fashion model. She lived in various other places for a while, including Italy, Greece and the Balearic Islands. It was while living near Palma in Mallorca that her path crossed with the Canterbury school : Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth and Kevin Ayers were occasionally residing on the island. It was through June that Allen and Ayers met Wes Brunson, the American millionaire who sponsored Soft Machine in their early days.
At that point, Lady June was using the pseudonym June 'Onion' for her painting activities, 'signing' each work with a small suspended onion bulb. From 1967, her involvement in painting, music and poetry intensified, and her artworks received numerous exhibitions. In 1970, June made a conscious decision that it was time for her to combine the music, visuals and words. This multi-media approach was subsequently developed in her performances, literature and recordings. Her public appearances became more frequent. She gave a talk and played tapes to polytechnic students in London and had several gigs in Britain during 1971, including a brief residency at the Electric Cinema in London. By now she had adopted the name Lady June.
Further public appearances were made by Lady June during 1972, including a performance at the badly organised International Carnival of Experimental Sound at London's Roundhouse, with Steve Hillage, Tim Blake, David Bedford and Lol Coxhill, an appearance at the Edinburgh festival, and the 'Fun and Games' gig in London during November with Geoff Leigh, Steve Hillage, Didier Malherbe and Gerry Fields. In addition, she performed in London with Henry Cow and a slide show, and during June played a gig with them at Amsterdam's Paradiso.
In the next year, she was visible at a variety of venues in England, solo as well as with Ron Geesin and Ivor Cutler. She was also involved in the BBC Radio 4 series "If It's Wednesday It Must Be...", featuring oddbods Kenny Everett and Viv Stanshall. June also prepared a series of tapes at the Radiophone Workshop for the BBC Radio 3 third programme. Also in 1973, she was close to a most dramatic incident, as it was at her and Gilli Smyth's birthday part, on June 1st, that Robert Wyatt fell out of a window and broke his back.
During 1974, Lady June gave her 'Uppers and Downers' show at the Cosmos in Amsterdam. The title was to be used for the booklet of poetry published by Virgin that appeared the following year. Also, there was a solo appearance at Amsterdam's Melkweg, supported by Hatfield and the North with whom she also made many private recordings. Work on her album progressed during the year; the finalised session was released by Virgin on the budget-priced Caroline label in early 1975 with the title Lady June's Linguistic Leprosy. Recorded at cost of £400 according to one review, it features Brian Eno (who was also resident in the Maida Vale area of London), Kevin Ayers (who wrote much of the music) and Pip Pyle. It is an adventurous and intriguing kaleidoscope of music and words.
Early the following year, June performed with Lol Coxhill and David Vorhaus amongst others, at the Puck Fair, with ex-Radar Favourite Gerry Fitzgerald (once a lodger in Lady June's flat), and in Wakefield with Fitzgerald and Coxhill. In the Summer she appeared on the same bill as Heathcote Williams and Mike Horowitz (for some years June has been a member of the Poetry Society in London), at the Unity Theatre with Fitzgerald and bass guitarist Colin McClure. She appeared too at the Edinburgh Festival, where she also did some compering. In December, Lady June's Linguistic Leprosy gave three performances of 'Away of Living' at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London.
In 1976, Lady June participated in a women's festival in Amsterdam incorporating slides, films and tapes, and with films at a gig for the Women's Free Arts Alliance (for whom she gave several readings), at another gig in Wakefield and did a couple of short sets in London. The following May, she made appearances in front of an audience of 8000 at the Gong reunion concert in Paris, at the Winchester Hat Fair, using slides and films; and at Battersea Arts Centre for a women's festival where she gave a short lecture on the transition from spoken word to music and song (playing an extract from the music of Gilli Smyth and Daevid Allen to illustre this). June also appeared on a BBC World Overseas programme that was broadcast to Spanish and Latin American countries. As well as being interviewed she played some tracks from her album and sang a couple of unaccompanied songs.
After this she returned to Spain for several years, making occasional live appearances in Deya, such as gigs in the Municipal Theme Park with Jeremy Hart and Hamish, and at a French restaurant in a recording made available on cassette and also featuring Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth and Ronnie Watham (who can be heard elsewhere on Smyth's Fairy Tales). In Deya, June organised jumble sales, slide shows, art exhibitions and did some photo-journalism for a Mallorcan newspaper. In 1981, she was given an award at an amateur film festival.
Lady June was to return to London on May 16th, 1982 to organise 'An Odd Acts Event' at the Centro Iberico in London. This event featured a hilarious story by Lol Coxhill accompanied by Gerry Fitzgerald on guitar; some solo poems by Daevid Allen; and Gilli Smyth's performance accompanied by extracts from Harry Williamson's Tarka, as well as Lady June's own performance. Some of the evening's music and words was made available on a cassette released in 1983. Later that year, June published a book and a booklet (Caves), and designed a calendar.
Subsequently, her activities have mainly been in Mallorca. She printed another calendar, exhibited in several events, organised further jumble sales and acted in the video movie Paradise Is In The Mind, directed by Del Negro, for which she wrote the title song. She also contributed to an exhibition of Fifty Years of Deyan Art which was shown on Spanish TV. In 1984 she had two tracks included on a French underground cassette called Insane Music (Illusion Productions) and another two tracks on a French various artists release entitled History Of Jazz.
During 1985 she exhibited in an Amnesty International Benefit show in Palma, and performed on the closing night with guitarist Gerry Hart. That year June mad various broadcasts on FM Radio Mallorca, produced another calendar and organised a poetry/music/song event on a full moon night in Deya, which featured herself, Joan Biblioni and a wandering Irish minstrel. A recording of this was made available on cassette. She also gave a sketch in August at Robert Graves' Amphitheatre.
Activities over the following two years included involvement in the organisation of an Arts Festival in Spain in 1987, where she also exhibited, which was filmed for Spanish TV, and the production of a calendar for 1988. Around this time, she also had an exhibition entitled 'Something Old - Something New' in London. During June 1989, Lady June exhibited 42 of her paintings at the Restaurante Suizo in Deya, opening the event with tapes, poetry and accompaniment by a guitarist. In 1990, she had a track called "Growing Up" on a French cassette called Ode To Samantha Fox.
In the two years leading to her sudden death, June had been working on her most ambitious project to date. With Mark Hewins as composer and musical director, this project, Rebela, became the meeting point for many exponents of the Canterbury scene. Mark Hewins hopes to finish the project as soon as possible; needless to say, it is greatly anticipated.
