SOLUTION-S/T, LP, 1972, NETHERLANDS

Though they'd quickly go astray, this debut LP from Dutch jazz rockers Solution is a seriously higher key treat. The compositional strategies arrayed here (by turns airily sprightly and hard charging), often bear an unmistakable resemblance to the Canterbury-by-way-of-Zappa work of their Dutch contemporaries in Supersister, particularly circa their debut "A Present From Nancy", though the blithe buoyancy and overt mellifluousness of their attack also makes comparisons to fellow Dutch jazz rock travellers Pantheon and Mr. Albert Show apropos here. From France's Moving Gelatine Plates to Germany's Brainstorm, it's a sound that was gaining a huge amount of traction across the European continent at that moment in history and for my money, it's just about as good as jazz rock gets.

Eric does tag his releases. He's extremely detail-oriented (thankfully) in that regard. What are you talking about?

vdoandsound said...

anonymous-He means add a string of brief tags along the bottom of each post (for instance: SYNTH, POST PUNK, NOISE, IMPROV, NO WAVE) as a kind of reductive shorthand to make it easier for genre specific types to pinpoint their areas of interest (and thus skip past stuff that exists outside of it), which really belies the whole point of what I'm trying to do here, i.e. trying to expand listeners horizons and help them absorb marginal information that would otherwise exist outside their normal purview.

Sorry...thats not at all my way of going about things...

Bravo! I am anti-tag in that sense too. Thanks for the explaination about the "other" tags.

Hey all. Love the site and am a big fan of all you do to spread love for the lost corners of the music universe. I'd like to pose a request if I might. I've been on the search for The Twinkeyz Anthology: Aliens in Our Midst on Anopheles. This seemed like it would be right up your alley and I was actually a little surprised not to find it in the archives of the site. Its been unfortunately OOP for quite some time and I've never been able to track it down. Any of you in the Mutant family game to post that one?

I don't know if I'm going to get through with all that gobbledygook above, but thanks Eric for the tagging and stuff, and starting to watch the length of titles and how far you go into the folders with the number of characters in the zips and rars. I've spent hours upon hours going back through the blog getting stuff to listen to (you're really a shot in the arm in that regard) and let's just say cleaning them up, putting covers in them, etc., it's just absolutely endless as far as getting it done. I'm even more anal than you Eric, I think, because I turn acutes back into apostrophes and use ascii diacritic characters (I got the whole lot memorised so I can change them fairly quickly) ...

I got one "genre" to describe all this music -- which I think of as "not radio music." I call it "Fish Eyes & Glue" music (after a colloquialism for tapioca pudding, my favourite, seems to fit in some weird synchronous way). So everything I get from you is tagged "Fish Eyes & Glue" for the genre, right now. I might go back and put the country in the Genre. I don't like tags in the sense that the guy in Spain wants either, and I like the surprise of what's coming next on the stereo.

One thing I do have that you don't Eric is more stringent rules for filenames within albums -- it's always: [Album Artist] - [Album] ([Year])\[Track #] - [Track Artist] - [Track Title]. I do them that way so that when I have Various albums, nothing's different about the tagging. I use a · rather than a / when more than one title is in a track ... e.g. ("I've Seen All Good People: Your Move · All Good People").

I'm busy going through all my old Subvulture material so that you can post it ... slicing it up and reformatting to fit two on a CD, because I've now come to believe that an album should not be any longer than 36 minutes, 22-25 if possible, else people are going to switch over to something else. In the mp3 age, I think the 3" format will rule. Don't know about titles yet, probably going to call one "Subvulture", another "st", another "s-t", another "s/t", still another "Self Titled", maybe another "Greatest Hits", another "The Best Of", another "Golden Greats" ... you get the picture. All titles will be generic just to make it fun. I do that because I just absolutely hate the s/t nomenclature and never ever use it (I hate most facets about actual record collecting, I wouldn't do it if it weren't for my wacky tastes).

And oh yeh, this album is great. They're all great. Everything you've posted here has had something to make my ears happy so far. Keep it up, man, you're beautiful.
