Hikashu-Natsu(+2),1980+Uwasa No Jinrui(The Human Being),1981,LPs,Japan

Hikashu is a long running sort of avant garde pop performance ensemble started in the late 1970s. Koichi Makigami(member of Tokyo Kid Brothers amongst others) is the lead vocalist and writes most of the material. He said they were "Like a play pretending to be a band"
From a synth standpoint Makoto Inoue and Yasushi Yamashita played synths in the original line up (which sounds to me generally more synth-oriented than later lineups), they left in the early 80s and among other things formed a synth duo Inoyama Land. For quite a while Hikashu used an alternative English spelling, Hikasu, without the second "h".
One of the greatest avant gardish pop/post punk acts in early 80s Japan.Jangling synth sounds,Koichi's strange vocals, psychedelic lyrics....Milestones of contemporary Japan music!

ONE FINAL NOTE...

As Blogger's "upgrades" to their formatting system have completely thrown my usual ability to format my text to the right of the image into a cocked hat (the text gets separated by vast chunks of space and once repaired, frequently reverts to it's previous mis-alignment), I've decided, as you can see from today's posts, to format all my text below the images and use bold faced type and italics to distinguish my posts from Jim's from this point on.

MORE ABOUT THOSE BLOG AWARDS...

Just wanted to add my two cents and extend a warm round of thanks to all those fans of our work here who've helped this blog's reach extend beyond my wildest imaginings. I'm frankly stunned and thrilled by our being singled out for a nomination such as this and deeply grateful to all who've taken the time to vote for us. For those that haven't had the chance to do so yet, here's the link again

BRAD LANER & RICK POTTS-FIGURINES (UNRELEASED), 1999, USA

Somehow, this dizzying collaboration between these two L.A. Free Music Society maestros mysteriously failed to garner a proper release (any takers?), so it's a particular pleasure to be able to present this cracked masterpiece to the patrons of Mutant Sounds (courtesy once again of Brad). Humor is remorselessly abused via dadaist ditherings and deformed cut-ups (the shadow of Nurse With Wound's Registered Nurse collage looming particularly large on some of the bits here) while frequencies tweeze and shatter on impact against a variegated palate of sonics that slink and slurp in a style that touches on tangents explored by both of their concurrent projects of the era (Electric Company and Solid Eye respectively) while still managing to lob umpteen curveballs in the direction of anyone who thinks they could casually suss out the warped strategems at play here. A simultaneous sloppy kiss and big wet raspberry from these two master pranksters, this slaphappy gem is calling out for you to lend your ears to it.

V/A-DOUZE POUR UN, LP, 1982, FRANCE

Requested just as I was getting set to post this anyway, this compilation is both a state of the union of demented French underground exploits circa the early 80's and a master class in locating the surreal in the suave and the bent in the breezy. Ayaa Records was ground zero for this dimension of the R.I.O. trajectory and this was their first release (before they changed their name from AAA to Ayaa). The list of contributors reads like a Mutant Sounds greatest hits mixtape, so the significance of this slab of delirium should be self evident. Blithering bliss awaits the intrepid listener. Volume Two will follow shortly...

WALL OF VOODOO-RING OF FIRE (REMIX)/THE MORRICONE THEMES (LIVE), 12", 1982 (RECORDED: 1980) + TWO SONGS BY WALL OF VOODOO, 12", 1982, USA

I've expounded at length elsewhere on this blog about the genius of this misunderstood and oft dismissed outfit, whose origins lie deep in the heart of L.A.'s freaky art punk fringe of the 80's (early gigs were frequently opposite synth punkers Nervous Gender with whom they collaborated live and percussionist Joe Nanini was a former member of Black Randy And The Metrosquad). Though my former post laid bare their earliest recordings via their self titled debut E.P., there's more where that came from. The Ring Of Fire/Morricone Themes 12" is, in all honesty, a bit slight (different vocal delivery on an otherwise identical cover of Johnny Cash's Ring Of Fire and an enjoyable but throwaway Morricone medly), though enthusiasts will, I'm sure, happily grab any odds and ends that one can locate from this era of their work, but the "Two Songs.." 12" is another story altogether. While the A side offers Mexican Radio (possibly redundant for many of you and the reason for their misapprehension as a one hit wonder new wave novelty act), the flip is a 10+ minute instrumental remix/deconstruction/live overhaul of Mexican Radio in the style of the instrumental segues from their debut E.P. and is an absolutely essential listen for anyone steeped in the mystery and myth of Wall Of Voodoo.

LARS HOLLMER-FRAN NATT IDAG, LP, 1983, SWEDEN

Probably my favorite of his many solos recordings, this wickedly brilliant missive from Samla Mammas Manna/Von Zamla mastermind Hollmer (his third) was recorded concurrent with his work in Von Zamla and their propensity for wedding the celebratory and giddy to the tensely anxious (one of the factors that make Von Zamla a high water mark of the whole R.I.O. canon) is writ large over the course of this album. Several of the insanely infectious themes contained within these cuts have spent 20+ years wheeling around in my mind relentlessly and these brainworms are requesting fresh cerebellum to infect with their sweet madness.

A. MORE (ANTHONY MOORE)-FLYING DOESN'T HELP, LP, 1979, UK

Ex-Slapp Happy/Henry Cow member Anthony Moore (here mysteriously re-christened A. More) was one of the many ex-Cow personnel who took up the post punk/new wave baton with a vengeance when that era rolled around (all brilliantly to one degree or another, BTW), though his engagement with the zeitgeist manifested itself in a rather more art poppy guise than some of his R.I.O. brethren in Henry Cow; something that could be expected from a musician who plied such luscious and frothy work with Slapp Happy. While not without it's missteps, there are a handful of profoundly memorable cuts contained herein, perhaps none more so than his stark and jagged version of "War" from Henry Cow's "In Praise Of Learning", which sits at a dramatic right angle from it's original form and bears a striking resemblance to the most dissonant and agressive bits of Morgan Fisher's Hybrid Kids (circa "Claws"). Elsewhere, a decided XTC angle is at play, a sensibility I'll happily celebrate and one that caps with the gorgeous "Judy Get Down". His second LP "World Service" will follow soon...

Megaptera - Nightmares,tape ,1992,Sweden

1991 sees the start of Megaptera. Magnus Petterson and Mikael Svensson starts making music after listening to bands like Test Dept., BDN and Controlled Bleeding. The result is very dark and deep. Megaptera have always been very inspired by movies and has since day one used dialogues, monologues or whole scenes and passages from various videofilms in their music. Sometimes to illustrate the music, often to illustrate the movie. Later that same year Peter Nyström joined in with the others. He had been doing electronic body music together with Magnus Sundström (Third Eye, The Protagonist, Each Dawn I Die) under the name First Aid. The three of them created material enough to fill a cassette which they sent to Roger Karmanik, and his company Cold Meat Industry. They were offered to release an MC on his side label Sound Source, which suited the band just fine.
In 1992 they release the vinyl album "Songs from the Massive Darkness", again with the help of Karmanik. During the work on that album Magnus Petterson decides to leave the band leaving them a duo. No new members are considered. After this first album their music starts to spread a lot. Important labels who contact them are Slaughter Production, Les Joyaux de la Princesse and Fluxus N2. The most important compilations Megaptera appear on are "Death Odors" and "From Sickness to Death" both released by Slaughter Production. Under this period of time Megaptera starts collaborating with Mårten Kellerman of the production team Jennifer (who for instance have produced the Morthound "Spindrift" and Each Dawn I Die "Notes From a Holy War" albums, among other things). From now on a lot of the forthcoming Megaptera material is often created, recorded and/or mixed at Jennifer's with the help of Mårten Kellerman.
In 1994 Megaptera finally release their first CD - on Fluxus N2. The title is "Beyond the Shadow" and the album consists of eight dark and nightmarish tracks. After the release of "Beyond the Shadow", they start working on new material for the follow up. The title of the finished album is "The Curse of the Scarecrow" and it's supposed to be released through Anomalous Records. Many things have delayed this album even though the music has been ready for release for ages and heaven knows when and if it will finally be released. In 1995 Mikael Svensson leaves Megaptera in Peter Nyström's single pair of hands. Due to this turn of fate Magnus Sundström, though never a member of the band, starts becoming more important for Megaptera's music. Peter writes and produces with the help of Magnus and Magnus' equipment. Their collaboration results in quite a lot of published material. The german label Art Konkret contacts Peter and wants to release a CD Peter finishes new material. This time the music sounds more like a soundtrack to a psychotic horror movie, with long and monotonous pieces. The result is the CD album "Disease", which was released spring 1996.In 1995 Slaughter Productions released a cassette tape called "You Will Never Survive This Nightmare", by cult Industrial act Megaptera. This cassette was a milestone in the development of genre of Death Industrial. Containing a re-mastered version of the debut cassette "You Will Recover" originally released in 1991 on Nuxdorf Recordings, as well as the three track cassette "Nightmares" and three unreleased bonus tracks. The formation of Live Bait Recording Foundation could be traced back to the acquisition of this cassette. So, it is with great excitement and honor we announce the re-issue of this seminal Death Industrial release for the first time ever on CD, completely re-mastered in the summer of 2006. Fleshing out this 125 minute double CD is a long forgotten 6 track live performance from London in 2006. Featuring a completely obscure set-list featuring favorites like "Someone's at the Door" and "Plague Spot". Get re-aquainted with your Death Industrial roots, or ours at least!!! Limited to 1000 copies!!!!
This is one of the very first Megaptera releases ,released privately, and exclusively distributed through Anomalous recs,in a limited edition of 6(!!!) copies. There's a 2nd edition distributed exclusively through Slaughter productions the same year but in a standard snap-case with a couple of inserts limited to around 10(!) copies!Megaptera is a reflection of a time when insanity, violence, lies, deceit, war, disease and death rule the planet. The sound will appeal fans of Archon Satani,Brighter Deat Now,etc.Dark industrial soundscapes at it's best!

MutantSounds Message to enviromental and earth protection

Friends of the blog
This is Mutant Sounds blog contribution to enviromental and earth protection. The need of new energy resources is urgent:climate changes, earth is burning, temperature rises, people die...no more music to be done.We have to stop this. The blog's suggestion to new energy recouces is energy from music!Since music is finally nothing else than mathematics,we can possibly transform the energy of "music" itself to useful types of energy. This is possibly a challenge ,for open minded scientists , to research.Imagine cars moving with music, planes flying with music ,cooking with music....THIS IS A DREAMWORLD!
Anyway...just giving my litle contribution(possibly mutant one) to enviromental matters....
PS:collage shown above made by Jim Mutantsounds under the influence of so many things heard today about our "dying" planet.

ULTIMATE SPINACH "Mind Flowers" unreleased recording 1967 (US)

This is an ultra rare recording of the legendary psychedelic band ULTIMATE SPINACH in a fantastic clear sound-quality. A must-have, if you like the Bosstown-Sound. It's a perfect performance of the leaders of this specific style, merging psychedelic, jazz and proto-progressive elements, which makes this concert an unforgetable listening. They play in front of a handful audience creating a very familiar communal athmosphere.

A monster rarity, publicly debuting at Mutant Sounds here.

Due to circumstances beyond my control, my uploads will be infrequent for the next few months. Still keep on downloading the excellent stuff Jim & Eric are posting, enjoy and remember: Music is the food of thought, like Tony McPhee of the GROUNDHOGS quoted.

Minox-Lazare,MLP,1986,Italy

Minox's art is atmosphere and refinement, melody and instinct, strength and vigor in splendid balance, an avant-garde trend that seeks contact with various artistic genres, without the ideological pretence of defining itself as total art. It does not limit itself only to sound but also moves toward the visual and literary arts, dance and theatre, image and poetry. Minox are already well known on the international front thanks to important collaborations and productions linked to the "Bruxelles Sound" and tied to the Central-European movement developed in the 80s by labels such as Crammed and Les Disques du Crepuscule. The band has also authored music for theatrical pieces and the first mise-en-scène in 1985 gave birth to the single "Suite Maniacal" for the Artzine Free for Industrie Discografiche Lacerba. One year later, their first album "Lazare", produced by Steven Brown of Tuxedomoon, was released to great critical and public acclaim throughout Europe. Serious events subsequently mark the group's activity (Raffaele Banci and Enrico Faggioli, two members of the first Minox line up died in '86) so Mirco Magnani and Marco Monfardini spend a long period of time away from the musical scene, dedicating themselves exclusively to sound experimentation and research, after recording an album which unfortunately never came to be released. They make their comeback in 1991, with a musical-theatrical production entitled "Minox play Lorca", a critical re-reading of the folk songs and the theatrical music of Federico Garcia Lorca. In 1994, Marco and Mirco found their independent label Suite inc. and break the label in with the CD single "Plaza", a release that pieces together the legacy left behind by their collaboration with the legendary Industrie Discografiche Lacerba. A year later they produce "B Movie Show" a concept album featuring 4Dkiller, Dubital and Minox which is something of a complex soundtrack to image-less B Movies. This occasion marks the debut of 4Dkiller, a project of electronic syntheses, the fruit of Minox's persistent dedication to sound research and experimentation. Under this guise, they come to remix several of Minox and Dubital's tracks. Over the next two years Minox produce and mix "Dubital ep", "Ignoranza & cultura" 12", "Lite" and Technophonic Chamber Orchestra's 1998 release "Beats and Movements". During the summer of 1998 Minox releases their limited edition CD Single "U Turn" featuring Lydia Lunch and making with her an interesting italian tour. During 2000 Minox went to the studio to work with their friends and collaborators from 1986 Steven Brown and Blaine L. Reininger of Tuxedomoon. A tour with Steven Brown in Italy followed, and on November 2001 has seen the light their new album "Downworks" featuring The Gentle People, Lydia Lunch, Nobukazu Takemura, Blaine L. Reininger and more.In 2003 Minox have direct the 4th volume of the thematic series Suitable "Suitable #3 the downbeatniks" and have produced the debut album of Enfantronique "Ecole 72" in 2004 they have produced "Nemoretum Sonata" the second album of Technophonic Chamber Orchestra. Actually Minox are working on their new album, they've invited Jan Jelinek (aka Farben, Gramm - Scape, de) and Dictaphone (City Center Office, de) and are compiling "Suite inc. classics" featuring Murcof, Daedelus, Jan Jelinek, Nobukazu Takemura, etc.

Great atmospheric minimal synth MLP much in the mid 80s european vein of Tuxedomoon...not suprising though as this was produced by Mr Steven Brown.

Great electronic experimental LP and also one of the most obscure releases of Innovative Communication label. Cosmic ambient stuff ,yet much quirkier than others of this genre (Klaus Schultze ,etc),mixing african ethnic elements with electronics. Really great, that's how early /mid 70s german space/cosmic electronics should have sounded in the early 80s(not that they didn't though).

Rare and strange finnish psych folk albums by Paroni Paakkunainen and Jazz guru Edward Vesala. Actually this is taking Finnish Folk music as a base and turning it into a wild mix of tribal Progressive with blitzes of Fuzz Guitar and heavy Acid Leads, weird percussion, violin, flutes and off beat vocals.. The players are: Armas Nukarainen (Seppo 'Paroni' Paakkunainen), flute, violin, soprano saxophone; Aslak Nunnu (Ilpo Saastamoinen), guitar; Pedri Sirmakka (Pekka Sarmanto) bass; Iivana Nyhtänköljä (Edward Vesala), drums, vocals.Don't miss them!

Circuit Rider-st,LP,1980,USA

Great private almost unknown heavy stoned psych LP. Excellent dark mystical atmosphere mixed with an outlaw biker's feeling and the voice...ah that voice was always a start of many rumours...reminding very much characteristic Jim Morrison's voice(like in Phantom's Divine Comedy same title LP from1974) this enforced the urban myth that Morrison's still alive. In some parts reminding also stoned YaHoWa 13 on a motorcycle race on acid. Also the year of release is not sure (some say it is 1971),but i believe 1980 is right. I remeber choosing to buy it back in 1984-85 only because of the wonderfull sleeve and when gone to pay the guy from the record store spoke with the best words about it saying too that it was Jim Morrison singing(i was only 17 years old then!).This enforced me to buy it and when i got homeand put it on the turntable i realised how right he was...magnificent LP.
