Part of a hugely musically significant and pathetically overlooked wing of the French R.I.O.-associated underground, Szentendre share membership with some of the most seminal French bands of the 80's, among them Hellebore, Look De Bouk and Toupidek Limonade and featured one Denis Tagu, responsible for running one of the central labels and distribution services for this breed of Gallic weirdity during the 80's and 90's (Ayaa Records), which makes him sort of a French Chris Cutler, albeit with a decidedly wackier disposition. Szentendre share with Tagu's sister unit's a deep grasp of how to secret the profound within impish offhand gestures and breezy bits of tinking rhythm box-led whimsy. These strategies would alternately be taken to more prog-composerly ends in Hellebore annd Look De Bouk (and more autistic and lurchingly bedraggled ends with Toupidek Limonade), but there's a perfectly lovely touch to the spare but bent mid-ground they've located with Szentendre and it's time more folks were in on this choice secret.
