GIGNOUX-THE BROADWAY BOYS, LP, 1980, USA

Before I say anything else, let's get this right out front: that cover... Yikes! To look at it, you'd probably guess it was a cut-out bin album of showtunes from some spirit of '76 bicentennial celebration. The horror. And yet...it's anything but. On the contrary, I can well imagine many of you getting plenty hot and bothered over this one. Anyone else out there up for the idea of an R. Stevie Moore/Brian Wilson/Todd Rundgren hybrid that ultimately segues into Lamb-Lies-Down Genesis territory (on the 10 minute album closer)? Thought so. Think what you want of Mr. Gignoux's presentational handicaps, but the majority of the contents herein are solidly unimpeachable art pop pearls, occasionally even venturing into the territory of the throat-lump-inducing. Never judging a book by it's cover just took on a whole new dimension with this completely undiscovered treasure.

Thanks for this, though I don't think this is as good as R. Stevie (though who is, really?). It's really accomplished playing and arranging, but I find that high, harmonized, reedy voice a little annoying after a while.

Have you by any chance heard that amazing Justen O'Brien & Jake album "Time Will Tell"?

fuzztunnel-First off, just want to say thanks for your constant stream of kind words over time. I have heard that Justen O'Brain & Jake (think I snagged it from Lost-In-Tyme). Really dig the last three tracks on it, but for my money, it's not really in the same league as this one. Since posting this, I've had "Before The Moon, Beyond The Stars" looping around in my head on auto-repeat, a degree of memorability I can't say I experienced with the Justen O'Brian & Jake. Different strokes for different folks...

oh...and everyone that reads fuzztunnel's comment should immedately snag that Justen O'Brian & Jake he's included the link for. Well worth your while. Quite odd stuff. Lounge psychedelia, maybe?

Interesting. I guess we're just going to have to agree to disagree on this one... :)
I'd put J'O B. & Jake high up in my top-ten-rarities-of-all-time list.

Too bad I'll probably never see an original vinyl in the flesh, and must content myself with the Radioactive reissue. I'd break the hundred-dollar barrier for this one, and I'm, shall we say, not a wealthy man?

re-gignoux
dang this record is great! I love everything about it: the arrangements, the keys, the complete lack of kick drum. Kinda reminds me of A. More's Flying does'nt help album. Thanks for posting this!
