ALPHABETICAL UPLOADS OF WHACKED OUT SINGLES PT. 5

What follows is the fifth installment in my ongoing series of postings of singles from the vdoandsound archives.

CARDIAC ARRREST-S/T EP, 1979, UK
This is one of two mega-rare pre-Cardiacs singles (anyone out there have/want to share their other?) and offers a revealing glimpse into the genesis of the instantly recognizable sound developed by The Cardiacs, one of the greatest groups to have ever emerged from the U.K, whose prog/punk/glam/art-pop mutations are insane enough to almost seem superhuman. At this early stage, the spasmodic post-punk angle in predominating far more than in their more well known work and it's an absolute joy to discover. I envy you the pleasure.

THE CHARLIE NOTHING DINGULATOR BAND-AIN'T NO FASCIST/DINGULATION NO. 1, 1980, USA
Amiable detuned strum and fumble whose work would fit tidily alongside any of a thousand current freak folk outfits, though for 1980, this is a pretty unusual gambit.

COLLECTIVE HORIZONTAL-S/T E.P., EARLY 80'S, UK
Ramshackle UK DIY from the Hornsby/North London scene that produced The Door and The Window and Paul Platypus' assorted projects, which the five screwily off the cuff nuggets here share some affinities with and which is unsurprising as Nag from The Door And The Window and The Reflections is one of the members.

PASCAL COMELADE-READY-MADE E.P., 1980, FRANCE
A super-rare early single by this French master of the delicately askew, replete with most of his tell-tale plink-plonk and wheezy keyboard toy instrument maneuvers and which is cut from very much the same cloth as his Parallelo LP from the same year, which was posted by Jim a long while back.

CONCEPUTOL-BULK FIBER/THE SPACE INVADERS, EARLY 80's, USA
Exceedingly fun, ludicrous and nerdy Devo worship (that back cover image speaks volumes) from this early 80's New York outfit. Count me among the amused.

CONCRETE-GHOULISH PRACTICES E.P., 1981, UK
Barring one misguided track built around an incessant sound byte, this is appealingly itchy, arch and spare post-punk with occasional Gang Of Four-ish overtones.

THE CORRIDOR DES AFFAIRES-THE NEWSMEN/SARAH MONA, 1981, NETHERLANDS
Top notch Dutch minimal synth outfit whose busy beat-box and skittery guitar constructs bring to mind Australia's Machinations.

R.L. CRUTCHFIELD'S DARK DAY-HANDS IN THE DARK/INVISIBLE MAN, 1979, USA
Featuring an altogether different line-up than later releases by this post-No Wave magus (with Mars' Nancy Arlen and Ut's Nina Canal backing him up here), this is every bit as tense and startling as the work that would follow (much of which I've posted), especially the brain-frying Hands In The Dark.

CRY SHARK-PROTECT + SURVIVE, 1981, UK
Completely unknown and most peculiar, this British unit offer up some exceedingly eerie Eraserhead-girl-in-the-radiator
sonics on the masterful title track and, conversely, some light weight but pleasantly smurfy art pop on the flipside.

Thanks Jim!

I'm a big Cardiacs fan,too!

Baz.

P.S:-Have you got any other stuff by 'The Faux' or 'Red Transistor'?
('The Faux' were on one the 'Obscure DIY 7"s vol. 9, while 'red Transistor' was on vol. 10.

The Faux sounds very 'recent', though. Is it really from the late 70's/early 80's?

Amazing stuff, Thanks! Good to hear the original version of "hands in the dark" after the recent (very good) re-worked version released by ITALIANS DO IT BETTER. It's stunning how dark and electronic CRUTCHFIELD was back in the end of the 70s. Sad that his best song "hands" is not part of the album "dark day". One of the most underrated New Wave Acts in my opinion.
